 Double hung windows

have always been common in older homes, but recently, they have become a popular choice as replacement windows and for new residential projects. The greatest advantage of the double hung window design is that they fit into any decorating scheme from historic to traditional to contemporary. Older homes often require custom window builds and installations and it’s important to have precise measurements to eliminate air and moisture leaks.

Another advantage is that because they slide up and down, up instead of opening out, double-hung windows don't take up exterior space when open, making them ideal for high traffic areas like adjoining walkways, porches and patios. Therefore, the design itself is the main benefit from a space-saving standpoint.

Tilt-out upper and lower sashes are the best features of today’s double hung windows. Some models offer tilting upper sections only. This feature makes cleaning and inspecting weatherproofing strips and repairing caulking very simple and convenient. Some models are offered with completely removable sashes, which offer obvious advantages

FAQ

Q: Their made of hard plastic and are privacy panels
Like privacy screen? We have that on one side of our deck. I've also seen what appears to be sheet plastic on entire porches and then they call it a Florida room. Of course I live in FL so that may have something to do with it.
Q: where to find plastic covering for basement windows?
if you are talking about plastic to keep warmth in, look in the painting section of walmart.
Q: The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
In our community, they tell us that the plastic is so negligible, that's its OK to toss those window envelopes in with the regular mixed paper. It seems that every community has a different recycling program ~ perhaps it would be best if you called your local recycling carrier and asked them directly.
Q: My windows seem to be extra drafty this year... It seems like one of them is open, but I can't find anything wrong with them. Anyhow, my heat is kicking on like every 15 minutes! I don't wanna get a $300 gas bill every month till winter is over... I'm thinking about putting plastic up on the windows --- How do I do this? What do I use?It seems so ghetto, but oh well.I live in an apartment building too btw..
I have the same problem . My windows are recessed on the inside of the house so I bought a 1/2 inch thick piece of smooth styrofoam at Lowe's and covered from the inside. It's a little dark in the room but it works great. You can also find heavy gauge clear vinyl at Lowe's or a fabric store and just tape it over the window from the inside. Vinyl works better than regular plastic because it's thicker.
Q: So there I was today sorting and paying my bills, throwing away all those ads and credit offers (yes I shred the stuff that could get me in trouble) and I end up with a large amount of those envelopes with plastic windows in them. Some of the mail have two, one that I open and one I'm supposed to send something to the company. Fat chance for them, I pay my bills on the internet and can't afford to get books and magazines through the mail. That's what libraries are for. I used to rip out the little windows and recycle but now they are glued in so tight they seem fused. So what do you say?a. toss themb. recycle with windowsc. The reclying companies love those little windows they give body to recycled cardboard and toilet paper !

So there I was today sorting and paying my bills, throwing away all those ads and credit offers (yes I shred the stuff that could get me in trouble) and I end up with a large amount of those envelopes with plastic windows in them. Q: What is the U value of the heat shrink plastic window film?
no ideal, just know it keeps the cold air out. it might tell u on the package u buy.
Q: this geo metro is a 92 4door hatchback and window is in the hatch and I am looking for new window molding to go around this window. If anyone know just put me in the right direction.
Depends what part you mean by plastic window moulding. The rubber stuff that's like a soft bumper is called weather stripping--you can pick that up at any auto parts store. If you mean the small piece of plastic that goes around the edge of the window itself--that comes with the window. The only way to make it look professional is to replace the window. Or at a minimum take the window out, strip the old stuff then replace it with new. An auto glass repair shop is the best place to talk to them about that. If you mean a plastic trim piece inside the car you can try a chevy dealer but it might be difficult to find parts for that model as it hasn't been made in about 15 years. Then you're stuck calling around to junk yards. Sorry, sorry, the new P.C. term is salvage lots.
Q: Have very little budget to work with, paid Marshall Construction of Kalamazoo to do the roof, haven't seen him since (Even with the contract), windows are in really poor condition and need to be replaced but don't have the funds to do it (Lost job like everyone else in Michigan). I have almost a zero budget to do this thanks to people like Marshall construction. Any suggestions how to get this 900 sqft home to stay warm without the furnace always working?
Plastic on the windows will help a little, especially if you can keep at least a couple inches between the glass and the plastic. If you do not have carpeting, put down some rugs. Check your furnace filter, make sure it is clean. Also if the construction company left you hanging, take them to court, you may be limited to the amount you can recover in small claims, but it also might push them into doing the work.
Q: they are white and look dingy
I have used a product called GOO Gone to remove the sticky residue left over from the plastic overlayment. I agree with the lady above have used Mean Green a lot and does a wonderful job . I have never used it on window, but have used it on patio furniture and on greases clothes. My Grandma also swear by vinegar and newspaper to clean a window to a perfect shine. After using Mean Green you will probably have to use something like Windex to get rid of the strike. Hope this helps
Q: I have a 1994 convertible with a plastic rear window, and it has 13 years of dirtiness on that thing. There is a bunch of ugly what I presume are scratches all across teh middle (probably from the folding process). Also, there are little almost transparent white circles (you have to see them from an angle though)... that are also really annoying. Can you identify what those circles are??I've tried meguire's plastx polish...and even some white vinegar distilled in water.Currently, im looking for a more aggressive product.
In some cases (not all) plastic can be restored using Noxema. Yes skin cleaner. It has stuff in it that gets down into the scratches, and cleans them very well. It has a very mild abrasive in it which will aid in removal of minor scratches. The best part is that you can snag a small amount from a wife, daughter or sister for free and try it to see if it will work on a small area before you go out and buy it yourself. I've never used it on rear convertible windows before, but I have used it on instrument clusters, and stereos with great results.
