Characteristic

Q:I have a electrical outlet in my room on a switch. I want to divert the wires in the attic so that I can install a ceiling light.The duplex electrical outlet has black, white, red, and ground wires attached. The wall switch has black, red, and ground attached. I connected black, red, and ground from the switch to my ceiling light. It does not work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.: Typically there are only three wires to lights and duplex outlets. White, black and copper. The black is generally the hot, the white is the common and the copper is ground. Take a tester and check to see if the black is hot. (Touch one side to the black wire and the other to the copper wire.) If you have 110 volts or so then touch one end of the tester to the black and the other to the red. If it reads 110 - 130 volts, you have power there and the light should work. If not you'll need to run a white wire from the recept up to the light.

Q:How do i wire two lights on a 3-way switchi have been messing around with this forever. If you have any web links to diagrams or can word it out that would be greatthanks: Buy Hubbell switches there is a diagram inside the box that makes it very clear. You need the switches anyway.

Q:I need to splice some 4 gauge electrical wire together to get a couple more feet, Are there wire nut big enough? or can I just tape it really good? What do i do?: you will need a split bolt (copper) and mastic pads. if indoor put both wires in a UL approved box 4-4 inches. MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF ! put both ends together in the split bolt and tighten. take a 6-6 mastic pad and wrap the split bolt / wires. then wrap electrical tape around the mastic area. this makes a real good connection and water proof.

Q:I have an electrical switch that controls a recessed light. I need to move the switch, taking down the wall it is on. My questions is, why are there three wires in there? I understand that one of them is for power into the switch, 2nd one for power out to the light not sure what the third one is for? Q:For example if I put a screw in the wall and it goes through an electrical wire will that screw cause electrical leaks. Another example is everytyhing in house was unplugged and shut off and power meter was still running, what could be the cause?: 1.If the inserted screw touches the phase conductor, a current can flow through the body to the earth if one touches the screw with bare hand. If there is a differential device (RCD), it may trip and protect the person. 2.If the above screw makes contact with both the neutral and phase conductors at the same time, the fusible will function or the circuit breaker will trip because of over current or short circuit. 3. Even if all the loads are unplugged, there could be power consumption and the energy meter will continue to run especially in very old installations, because of deteriorated insulation of conductor wires.

You snag the other guy's shoes and ties them together, then hurl them up to see if they can get caught on the powerlines. It's nothing mroe than that. Q:Everytime we leave the bedroom light on for too long ( say 30 minutes or more ), I open the door to the faint smell of something that resembles burning rubber and it gives me a headache. You have to use the outlets directly, you cannot use power bars or extension cords with them. Some have issues when on different sides of the power lines (each half of the 240V). Just try different outlets if having issues.

Q:I want to wire a switch/outlet combo to control my router in a table. All I want is for the switch to control power to the outlet -- nothing else. The switch/outlet has five screws -- ground, N, A1 and two common. When i wired the black wire to A1 and the white to the opposite common, the breaker tripped. If I move the white to the N screw, it works, but this setup doesn't seem to make sense to me. I connect the switch/outlet combo via a standard 3-wire cord to a wall outlet. A side issue is that I can't insert the router power plug into the combo's outlet. It only goes in about half way.: You say a standard 3-wire. A 3-wire outlet is not standard. A 3-wire outlet would be for a machine that is 240V. 2 hots and a white. 2-wire is a standard outlet; black white green. White is common/neutral.no voltage should be on it. Sounds like you bought the wrong receptable. Sounds like you bought a 2-pole or maybe a 3 phase receptable. I'm not too sure to be honest.
