Can I trust tile purchased at any particular large hardware chain, or should I seek out a specialty flooring store? This is a universal rating scale used to judge the hardness and durability of ceramic and porcelain tiles. The scale runs from 1 to 5 with five being the hardest. In a high traffic area, like a kitchen, please don't use anything below a 3. 1 and 2 ratings have the weakest finish on the market, these will be any tile that's between $0.50 and $1.50 per square foot, at least in the Mid-west. please make sure that your tile is installed on concrete or concrete board. otherwise, it WILL crack up on you. Q:Installing support bars on bathtub ceramic tile: If using a spade bit, buy two bits, a small one to drill a piolet hole then advance to the size that you need, if you have someone to help you can have them to spritz the bit with water constantly while you are drilling as the bit will get hot, you can also apply a piece of tape on the tile to help keep it from chipping out while drilling.....they also make a diamond bit for drilling tile and glass. Check at your local hardware store or Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, etc.....

Q:I‘m installing 13 x 13 cermic tiles. We‘ve laid the tile to try to configure the best layout. However, the one with the best layout with the easiests cuts leaves one very complicated one. The tile lies directly on the air duct, with the cut being a large rectangular hole in the middle of the tile. If we adjusted the layout to have 2 tiles lay over the duct, it creates more complicated cuts everywhere else.How do you suggest I cut this tile?We have only a wet tile saw.: you can use a diamond tip drill bits for drilling holes for tiles. or you can try this trick i've learned from my workers. place masking tape over the tile and mark the spot to drill. set your drill on drill (not on hammer) using a new (sharp) masonry drill slowly drill through the tile. use a tile cutter to cut your way through the hole. this will take some time but you'll save money, time if your only doing 1 tile, however if your going to do lots of drilling better get a diamond tip drill bit. you can also use the angular grinder with diamond disk cutter for 2 or bigger holes. again cover the tile with masking tape. use safety quipment for this. wet saw tile is ok for the layout, go for aesthetic or visual outlook of the tile not the complicatedness of installation, it must look good for you to be satisfied.

Q:We currently have vinly tile in our tiny kitchen. We want to upgrade but want something that looks nice and is easy to install. What would you recommend (not wood)? Also, would we have to take up the vinyl floor tiles or install on top of it?: I once had a laminate flooring installed in my kitchen. It was about 16 square and looked like terra cotta tile. It was shaded where the grout was printed on the laminate. So, it looked like real tile. When they installed it, they didn't remove any of the old flooring. They just lay a sheet of thin foam rubber backing and installed the laminate squares (they had a tongue-and-groove interlocking). It came out great and cost about $6 a square foot installed. But, it's easy enough to do yourself. A friend of mine does tile and couldn't believe it wasn't real tile (he had to actually feel it to prove it to himself).

And if so how or where do I go to learn how to do this.Thanks.: There okorder / it recommends not using floor tile paint in places such as bathrooms where there is moisture. I guess you could paint the floor a week or two before putting it on the market - a case of buyer beware if it all scrapes off 6 months later - but the paint is quite expensive so I wouldn't personally go down this route myself - as it's not a nice thing to happen for the unsuspecting buyers. I'm guessing that currently the floor is more of an eyesore as you haven't integrated this into your current bathroom design? Personally, I would ditch the painting idea and buy a decent off-cut of lino and cover up the old floor tiles since you only have a small area to work with. Lino nowadays comes in many guises/patterns and since it's a small area you can check all local companies for offcuts of perhaps the more expensive pseudo 'wood' type lino etc... You may spend ?50 but it will brighten the room and transform it into a more modern look - and ultimately will help you get your asking price. (You could also tell the buyers that the original green tiles are still underneath and they could reveal them if they wanted to...just don't tell them how ugly they are...the secret is to get them excited about new possibilities in the future!!)
