- Q: so im going to try and make yarn from golden retriver fur(undercoat) its not matted, large debris removed, about and inch-inch and a half longso im planning on washing it, spinning it, carding it(ill get back to that) so what order should i do it in? as in i no carding goes first then spinning, but when should i wash it? what will make the best yarn? - If you know how to wash fibres, you can do it firstBut there is usually not any or much grease in it, so it would only be dustyI would not wash it, because of the danger of matting itI would spin it first and wash it afterYou can spin it worsted or woolen, depending on the kind of yarn you wantSome people find the doggy smell unbearable, but I have not had a problemIt only smells when it is wetI've spun it first, and washed it after spinning without problemI use a bit of vinegar in the final rinse to help give the yarn some body, and to remove any odourDepending on the breed of dog, it can be quite nice and softIt can be easily dyed with any acid dye.
