1. - Q: Surly Pilots don't just switch the fuel selector valve of mid flight
- Not to take away from JFK jr's piloting skills but the possibility exists that he failed to check to see if the fuel valve was on in the first place. I do not know how far along in the flight he was, but a typical piston engine plane can get you up and on your way with the fuel that is in the fuel system. Why I know this, my flight instructor while training one of his students died in a forced landing due to engine failure because the fuel valve was not turned on. My flight instructor would allow his students to perform the preflight on there on, of course after many hours of dual training. The plane was a piper four place, it made it to about 400 feet agl before the engine stalled from fuel starvation. The irony of his death was from complications on the operating table from a broken ankle and a blood clot that broke loose. Checking for the on position of the fuel valve is on the check list. During emergency landing procedures, one of the functions is to turn the fuel valve off to reduce the possibily of fire. This doesn't answer the question but is a possibility unless of course he was well into his flight before the accident, in which case he probably moved the fuel valve to the off position following emergency procedures.

- The Mopar Performance blow off valve is really going to be your best bet if the two are roughly the same price. The reason I say that is because the Mopar unit is designed to fit onto that car, therefore it is engineered to release excess pressure at a safe level for that engine. The Greddy unit is also going to typically require modification to make it fit and function properly. Unfortunately, what they don't tell you about universal units is the reason they are universal is because they don't fit anything until you make them to fit, you just have enough material and hardware to get creative with it. If you are looking to extensively modify your engine, then it may benefit you to go with the universal unit and just wait until you have your piping cut exactly the way you want it, this may give you better location or clearance using the aftermarket unit, but otherwise like I said, I would go with the factory performance BOV. - Yes it is possible. It sounds like you have the type of rim that takes the smaller shafted tubes and not the standard style you can normally find in departments stores. You need to take your bike to a cycle shop and have them look at the hole and see what sort of tube you need.

- Q: The hot water shutoff valve to the washing machine was dripping. I removed the packing nut and put in new packing over the weekend. Problem is that the packing nut seems to only go back on at an angle no matter what I do...it may have already been that way though. The valve isn't currently dripping, but I'm not liking the way the packing nut only goes on at an angle. Would it be crazy to keep the existing valve if I keep an eye on it and over time it doesn't drip, or is it too risky to keep this valve given that the packing nut is on at a funny angle? - A new valve is around $6. If you were able to do the work you did you certainly are capable of replacing the valve by yourself. That plumber is yanking your chain.

- Ben- If your car is not turbocharged you cannot install a blow-off valve. If your car is turbo-charged, this annoying device replaces the Waste Gate. What does a blow-off valve do for your car? NOTHING! It does not add horsepower. It is simply a noise maker to attract the attention of Law Enforcement. So what can you install to improve a Turbo-Charger's boost capability? HKS Controller, Cold Air Intake, Intercooler, High Flow Catalytic Converter, and some type of high performance exhaust system. What's this going to cost? $5000.00+ easy! Lastly, the Blow-Off Valve has nothing to do with the EGR Valve. Two totally different devices, performing two completely different tasks. And... not to burst your bubble. Since you don't know the difference between a Blow-Off Valve and an EGR Valve, I suggest you start taking some basic Automotive Technology classes BEFORE you get into learning about the high performance parts. Why? The last thing you want to do is get into something that is over your head, then have a very large repair bill on your hands because your inexperience in the task at hand is the result of the damage done to your car. One last item here. Performance does not equal fuel efficiency. The more horsepower you want, the more fuel will be required to make it. The more horsepower you desire, the lower the reliability. This becomes a factor because you will be harder on the parts which are doing the jobs required of them. So think before you decide to make major changes to your daily driver. Making performance changes to your daily driver, is a great way to have your friends passing you up with you stuck on the side of the road facing a big tow bill and an even larger repair bill. Bottom line, build your muscle car for a weekend romp, and leave the 4 Cylinder job shuttle alone. Just speaking from 25+ years of turning wrenches!
- Q: my Hunter SVC VALVE will not work with my Lawn Genie Valve. Is this becaous the voltage is not matched? Hunter says it operates solenoids at 6-9 v DC // Lawn Genie says it is an 18 v DC solenoid. :-( my original Hunter Valve broke and I replaced it with the Lawn Genie. Should I get a Hunter Valve , or a Lawn Genie Controller at this point/ or is there something I have overlooked?.
- Your Hunter transformer only provides about half the voltage needed to operate the Lawn Genie solenoid. You might find a weaker spring for the LG solenoid, but the long term fix is to stay consistent. Either use all Lawn Genie, all Hunter, all Rain Bird, etc.
