I have tried using non-Virgin Mobile phones on Virgin Mobile, and they always tell me that they simply cannot activate an ESN that their system does not recognize as a Virgin Mobile phone. There are ways to change your ESN to that of a Virgin Mobile phone, but they are illegal. Don't do it. Just buy a Virgin Mobile phone, they're not very expensive. Maybe you can post on craigslist that you need a Virgin Mobile phone and someone will trade you phones. Sorry for the bad news!

- Between those 3, I would definitely have to say the Curve 8900(a.k.a. Curve 2). I bought that phone on the 11th when it was released and it is the best phone I have ever owned. The screen has an amazingly high resolution for the size and is very clear. It has a 3.2 MP camera with a flash that takes great pictures. It is also the thinnest full QWERTY Blackberry on the market. The processor in the 8900 is almost twice the speed of the processor in the first Curve. Like the first Curve(T-Mobile's at least), this phone also has wifi browsing and wifi calling features(UMA, can be used to make calls over wifi with the unlimited hotspot calling add-on). It also has good battery life. It doesn't have 3G like the G1 does, but to me that wasn't important. It also supports microSD SDHC memory cards, and has a 3.5mm audio jack.

- Restrictions on the use of mobile phones are a legal matter, not a safety matter. Despite what some flight crews say (and what airlines deliberately teach them), mobile phones do not interfere with aircraft systems. In the United States, FCC regulations prohibit the use of cellular telephones at any point in flight (flight being defined as any time that the aircraft's wheels are not touching the ground). This means the whole flight, not just takeoff and landing. The restriction was put in place because the FCC feared that cell phones in the air would overload base stations on the ground. This turned out not to be a problem, but the restriction is still in place. The relevant regulation is 47 CFR § 22.925. The FAA also places restrictions on the use of portable electronic devices in flight. This restriction arose out of the fear that electronic devices would interfere with aircraft systems. This also turned out not to be a problem, but the regulation is still in place. The relevant regulation is 14 CFR § 121.306 for airlines. So the only reasons for the restrictions are legal restrictions. It's not a matter of electronic interference, or the crew getting yoru attention, or anything like that. Anyway, airlines vary in their zeal for enforcement. The FAA itself encourages airlines to ignore its regulations during certain phases of flight. See Advisory Circular 91.21-1B.
