Q:Ok I have a eureka whirwind vacuum cleaner and whenever I use the hose and take it out of the hole and turn the vacuum on dust shoots out of the hole and i have to turn it back off because there is no point in using it if its just gonna shoot the dust back out! So, duct tape, duct tape, duct tape! And now it works fine. Looks silly, though, but who cares, so long as it works? That was the hole at the back, where the hose enters the machine; if it is the hole at the side where the hose stays when not in use, you have a clog that forces the dirt back out. So if you aren't adept at disassembling vacuum cleaners, have it checked if it's worth it to you. If not, a decent vacuum can be had for under $200.00.

Ultimately, no vaccuum under $400 is going to have 100% great reviews. There's always going to be a few bad experiences. Instead of looking for one with all glowing reviews, look for a high ratio of good to bad reviews. Also, look for bad reviews that involve less expensive repairs: a vacuum that tends to burn through fan belts is still better than a vacuum that blows up the second time you use it.
