4. How to choose bathroom tiles? Porcelain tiles or glazed tiles?

- The disclosure form is making you aware of the problem. You can do one of two things. You can require the tile is removed by THEM before you purchase the home (before closing) or you can get some estimates to have it removed and ask for a reduction in price by at least that amount. Or you could just walk away from the deal. If there's asbestos tile on the floor there is likely to be asbestos in the walls along with lead base paint if the house is old. I would probably walk away unless you can ABSOLUTELY have the rest of the house tested for those qualities. They may exist and that's why the owners are selling. Those are just my thoughts

- In some measure it depends on how strong you want the tiles to be. Fired clay, in even a tile sense, is usually done at 3600 degrees in a kiln. Then cooled, painted/glazed/ etc. and fired again. At a decent pottery retailer you can find dozens of types of clay, and in fact some that is low fire, or even oven bake, which can be hand painted, and perhaps glazed over with a clear coat and no re-firing, but the strength and durability issue will still exist. Clay for tile, Ceramic or Porcelain, is slab rolled for consistency, Cut precisely, fired in kilns, cooled, then is decorated variously. Some larger houses will sell blanks that one can decorate themselves, even coffee mugs/cups/ bathroom sinks. etc. Obviously with a rolling pin and some risers, at 3/8 or 1/4, you could hand roll the clay and cut it, but then what? Below is a link for a general search to a company that can give you all the info you need in various methods and types of clay used. I spent a lot of $$$ with them in the early part of this decade. - I'm pretty sure that a hardware store will do that for you like Lowe's or Home Depot. You would just need to pay for a cutting charge per piece.
- Q:I‘m tiling my bathroom shower and need to cut holes for the shower head and body sprayers. I‘m using porcelain tile and I‘m not having any luck cutting the holes. I‘ve bought a couple holes saw bits that say they are for porcelain, but they just don‘t seem to be doing the job. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
- I cut ,and you can too, all my porcelains and ceramic tile w/ a wet saw. I mark front and back w/ a permanent marker. I mark a 1 to a 1/1/4 hole . I make a square . Front of the tile I just score it good w/ a wet saw. In this case the smaller the blade the better. Then I flip the tile over and hold the tile w/ my arm w/ my fingers over the scored front holes. Then I plunge cut each side of the hole carefully. Just letting the blade come thru. It won t cut your fingers .. Once you have all 4 side cut, you can tap the hole out or carefully cut it more until it falls out. They also make a small dry saw that has a 4 blade that will work, since I ve also used mine 100 s of times this way too if my wet saw wasn t set up. - Q:I have ceramic tile in my bathroom and I don‘t like it. It‘s extra slippery and very cold in the winter. Yes I do use a rug but the parts that are exposed are cold. I want to put those peel-n-stick tiles on top of them, but what do I have to do to prepare the floor if it‘s even possible to do this? Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!
- If you are going to be in your house forever, use carpet. If not, do not remove it as it is an asset to your property. If you use peel and stick in a bathroom, they will eventually start warping and lose their grip. I doubt the peel and stick tiles will be any better regarding temperature than the tiles you have now. Tiles are valuable when you go to sell and I would advise you not to change that. Use a rug if you want, but do not hide or change the tiles.
