- Q: Is there a simple way to lay ceramic tile. It is for a small bathroom. Never laid it before but There is a first time for everything. Should I use small tile or large.About 50 sq feet
- make a cross to center of room and work from center to outer side. lay every thing out dry before you start adhering anything since this is your first time. try to adjust for cut tiles in your hidden corners. small tiles are easier to work with on the edges but large lay down faster. Best get a Friend that has done it before to lead you through the first time, then maybe you can pay it forward and show someone else next time. This way I had very little cutting, which I beleive is the hardest part. Do you know about scoring tiles to cut to fit or nipping to fit odd area's. I am a due it your selfer and I like to use the mosaic because I just waste to many tiles when I use the large grid. My kitchen has four differant types of tile in it because of this, and every one has told me it looks great. For the floor I Used a Large nuetral beige tile for most of the area then along the boarders of the room I used a ligh mosiac with more of a pink hue but still nuetral tone. For the counter tops I used the same size 1 inch mosaic as the boarder mixed in with a larger amount of white, and the back splash was even smaller already mixed mosiac tile combo with all the previous colors. the back splash was the color inspiration for the rest. Use a sanded grout for your first grout run, rub that down then fill in again with the same color non sanded grout it goes faster and looks better. then seal.
- Q: How can I find out how many tiles I need to buy?
- Measure and figure out the square footage of your kitchen floor.
- Q: Dont want to lay down the rock. Want to attach strait to the plywood due to dish washer stove and cabinets. What is the best way for long lasting tile strait to plywood?
- The function of the Durock is to provide a mechanically attached transition from wood to tile. Without it, ceramic or porcelain tile will crack from the movement of the wood subfloor. You can do it right or do it over. It's your call.
- Q: What is all porcelain called semi-tiles
- This is the difference between the appearance of the two kinds of brick, then talk about the quality, whether it is all porcelain or semi-porcelain, if it is at the same price, then the glazed tile is exactly the same, wear the same, not the same place is clay , Because the firing temperature is not the same so the degree of magnetization is not the same so the water absorption is not the same, but that the actual point of the water absorption is said that the embryo is not glazed, whether it is all porcelain or semi-porcelain glaze will not absorb everyone tiles
- Q: I only have a couple of tiles in my shower to grout. I bought some pre-mixed tile grout from Home Depot. It says on the back NOT FOR USE IN SHOWER OR UNDERWATER. I called home depot and they said it would work if I were to seal it. As many know sealer is very expensive and I‘m only doing a couple of tiles that will be exposed to water. Do I have to seal this? I understand there exist grout with sealer already inside.....
- Im a floor installer and as i would probable have grount to match your grout ...You do not... so what i recomend you do is.. bring it back to home depot and get matching caulk.. yep you heard me.. their is sanded and non sanded caulk now a days to match you grout...thats what ya do and while your at it re caulk ya tub w/ whats left...lol
- Q: We had a piping problem in out house and we need to find self stick tiles. We honestly cant find any good places to find these tiles. If anyone can give good suggestions on where to find some self stick tiles? I live in dearborn Michagan.
- The tiles you seek can be found at any home improvement and carpeting store. Self-stick tiles are nice but they require perfect preparation before you attempt to lay them. Anything less than that will disappoint you when the tiles start lifting or they develop ugly peaks and valleys from the foot traffic. Good luck with your project.
- Q: the tiles are laid down using thinset cement. Mastic not used.
- Trying to save the tile is a lost cause. You'll end up breaking them. The good thing about tile, if done right, it is forever. The bad thing about tile, it is forever, until you decide to replace it.. Double edged sword.
- Q: The hammer took a chip out of one tile, the chip is about the size of a pencil eraser. I‘m just heartbroken as we just had this tile installed 12 days ago! Is there any way to fix this- short of replacing the tile? I‘ve already bought a rug that will cover the hole but I‘d still like to fix it if I can. Just in case we ever would like to go without a rug. Thank you!!!
- short of replacing the tile, you might try super gluing the chip back into the tile. but thats about all you can do.
- Q: My husband and I put ceramic tile floors in our kitchen, dining room, office, and laundry. We cannot seem to get them clean. I use to scrub them with a brush and bleach but can‘t with a small child and being pregnant. We have tried swiffers (wet jet and sweepers) a mop and bucket, a steam mop, nothing seems to get them very clean, just pushes the dirt around. I need something that will get them sparkling and be easy to do while pregnant, please help.

- Q: i don‘t even know how to explain what i want to ask.. but here i go....how do you make sure they come out straight. i know how to lay them but how do you make sure the second row comes out straight at the other end. I guess i need help lining them. chalk line will help but how do i do it. is there a website or video that may help me. ((( i lay down the first row along the chalk straight line. i then lay down one half tile at the end of the first tile row. then i continue with the full tile so i can get a staggered look. but how do i make sure that the second row is dead on? help if you can thanks. also if you have any other advice for laying staggered floor tile let me know. thanks.20x20 Porcelain floor tile.
- The best thing to do is snap a chalk line down the center of the room, lengthwise. Then snap another chalk line running down the center of the room, widthwise. Where the two lines intersect will be the room center and your starting point. Keep in mind that rooms are seldom square. Don't be surprised if the room narrows or widens as you go. A basic rule of thumb when laying tile is to always do a dry fit first to see how the tiles will lay. This way, if you have to make any adjustments, it will be much easier than when they're in thinset. Don't forget to allow for the spacers for the grout line. For a 20x20 tile, I would go with a 1/8 grout line. You will need to use sanded grout. You want whole tiles in the center. The last rows against the wall can be cut to fit. Once the baseboard is installed, it will look like the tile runs under the wall. For door trim, use a Japanese saw to cut the trim just above the tile, using a tile as a height gauge. That way, the tile can slip under the door trim. The Japanese saw is a special, offset saw that allows you to make precise cuts at floor level. Buy, borrow, or rent a wet saw for cutting tile. It will save you a lot of time and make the job look professional. Make your cuts as you do the dry fit, so each tile fits perfectly. Once you get the tiles cut, you can identify them by the row and position they go in, or by some other method that allows you to fit the right tiles in the right place easily and accurately. Use modified thinset for setting the tiles. Don't cover the whole floor at once! Work about 10 square feet at a time. Keep in mind that the mixed thinset has a limited working time before it starts setting. It's better to mix a small batch each time. Use a 1/4 square notch trowel for spreading the thinset. Place the spacers between tiles to set them even distances apart for the grout lines. Above all, plan your moves and take your time. If you do it right, you'll only have to do it once.
