- There is no easy way, just some ways that aren't quite as difficult as others. Get a floor scraper from HD or Lowe's. Also get a stiff putty knife and a torch. Use the knife and torch to start an area, then pop the rest of the tiles off with the floor scraper. Next, you will need to remove the adhesive. Use the torch to soften the glue, then scrape it off with the putty knife. Once you get the majority off, you can use adhesive remover, which is available at most tile stores, to get the rest off. If you can, use a sander on the floor to remove any traces of the adhesive before staining. Hope this helps.

- Legally you must make that outlet accessible. A dremel tool can grind through tile without damaging the rest of it if you can locate the outlet closely enough. A Special large plate and box extender could then solve the problem. As a practical matter, you can leave it and hope no problems come up.

- Tap around the floor in a tight pattern. Loose spots will sound hollow. Cut them out completely with a sharp utility knife, angleing the knife away from the center of the spot you are cutting. Spred a floor prep, such as Ardex or Planipatch ( both portland cement based floor preps), over the floor to fill the holes and any pattern (you will need an 18 flat trowel). Spread the mix on the floor at a 45 degree angle. Scrape off the excess at a 60 to 70 degree angle. Work in a semicircle sweeping motion, leaving only what you need to fill the holes and pattern. The prep will get lighter as it dries, usually 20 - 45 miniutes depending on the size of the cutouts. All prep shrinks as it dries, so you may need to coat larger cutouts a second time. Scrape down any ridges with the edge of the trowell, use a low 5 to 10 degree angle to avoid gouging floor. Sweep floor thoroughly, at least twice, and vaccuum up pile. Then you are ready to set tile. Be sure to use the right notch size on the trowel for proper adhesion without squeez out mess. Also read the glue directions. Many glues need open time to tack up before setting tile. Doing this will make sure that you are getting the best adhesion possible. It will help to resist water damage, and it will keep the pattern of the vinyl from telescoping through the tile over long peroids of time.

- If the tiles are 12x12 it depends on the number of tiles you had them paint. You could put them in album frames and hang like pictures; you would get a piece of 1/4 plywood cut to size at Home Depot, paint the wood, glue them down and put hangers on the back; You could get cut plastic sheets or acrylic and arrange the tiles on the sheets, let's say if you had four, you could put four square in the center with 1 1/2 inch between them and two inches around the outside (30x30) You could then get the kids to decorate the border on the plastic with paint, beads, mosaic.

The guy there reccommended installing a backerboard on drywall first. Is this difficult for a first-time DIYer? Several of the tutorials I‘ve found online install directly onto the drywall. - Backerboard, hardiboard cement board, different material, same purpose. It would be overkill on your project. whether you do it is up to you. but definitly not necessary. its mostly used for extreme wet conditions where water is constant in contact, such as shower/baths, or flooring on drywall install the tile directly on the drywall using thinset mortar, premixed is fine to use especially for smaller projects. use spacers and a good grout, let dry about 12 hours,then wipe it down again, let it dry for 6 hours then apply sealer. on backerboard, remember applying backerboard to drywall will extend your wall, if you use 1/2 backerboard, plus 1/8 thinset, then 1/4 tile, you bring out the wall 7/8 of inch, of course they make 1/4 backerboard but still 5/8, remember you have to cap this somehow to bring the tile back to the wall. If you want more flush look you need to remove the area of drywall which you plan on tiling, when you do this, cut the drywall about 3 smaller on all sides smaller than the area you are tiling, cause you have to tape and finish seams between the backerboard joints using fiberglass mesh and mortar, screw holes need to be filled as well. as far as drywall to backerboard joints easier to do what i said above and keep it flush. The only consequeces is that without proper installation it could lead to moisture problems. But thats with anything that isnt' properly installed.

- Smiles; I got here late. Good On ya Steve and papercut. They've essentially said all I could say after multiple bath remodels and truck loads of tile. Take their suggestions. LOL; OK I'll add two cents. Without knowing the style or size of tile you intend; wall tile is often easier to install; or offers a better install if you use the Mesh backed. My second penny would be used to suggest 1/8 grout lines at most; and take the tile all the way to the ceiling. I use a Poly blend Mortar and grout, as opposed to a mastic. I also agree with paper cut in that I try to convince customers to NOT always tile the shower floor. I prefer the molded shower bases; with the wall tile down to them; but that's just a personal choice. Certainly no matter; a decent PAN is neccesary.. In any case you've been given great suggestions and I just wandered in. Good luck. Good to see QA peers all meeting in the same place too. Steven Wolf
