- Q:I was told by one guy at Menards to use a 1/4 teeth trowel for 6-1/2‘‘ x 1/4‘‘ floor tiles. I am worried this will be too much glue and will ooze out the 3/16‘‘ gaps between tiles. then it will be a nightmare mess, and can‘t grout.Also do you just lay the tiles on the glue? or press down ?how much?Thank you very much
- Trowels come in several shapes and sizes generally from 3/16 v-notch to half-inch square notch. The proper trowel size is basically matched to the tile size; the smaller the tile – the smaller the trowel; the larger the tile – the larger the trowel. I'd use 1/2 x 1/2 square notch for floor tiles that large.
- Q:We are redecorating our bathroom. We are on a very limited budget. We can‘t afford to rip out the old tiles and put in new, so we‘re wondering if there is something we can do to make them look new and/or different. Such as painting them? That was my idea, but not sure that tiles can be painted? Can they? And if so how? What exact steps do we need to do to paint the tiles? Or any other ideas on making them look better? - I've used several off the shelve tile cleaners and many of them work wonderfully. However, if you have ugly tile, not just dirtly tile, then a cleaner is not going to do the trick. Painting tiles is a very short term solution. Paint will not last long on a tile surface. When it starts coming off you're likely to have something that's even worse. The cost of replacing the tiles yourself will be very low, ultimately depending on the surface underneath the tile and your choice of tile. I've done it a few times in my own house and have found that good looking tile floors are one of the easier do-it-yourself jobs. It seems a lot more difficult than it turns out to be. The cost of a book, one day rental of a tile cutting saw, tile of your choice, and other supplies should only run you about $100 to $200 and yet the results will be truly remarkable. I'd count on a good three days if this is your first tile job. This sounds like a lot of time, but you'll only have problems if you're in a hurry -- so don't rush it.
- Q:how to tile vanity top and back splash?
- No you don t have to, since this is really classified as a non wet area. I know you ll splash some water there but the basic tile will take care of that. You won t hurt a thing replacing the sheet rock with it but you don t need to. To tile a vanity top, secure ( glue and screw) 3/4 ply or 2 -1/2 ( cross the ply graining for strength ) ply to the counter top. Properly thinset and nail down (or screw down)1/2 cement board to the ply with proper length galvanized nails or screws. Thin set down your tile and grout after 24 hrs. Then re set you plumbing. I ve done a couple 100 over the years and not 1 failure going over the dry wall in this type of non wet area.. Wet areas such as tubs and showers I ve always used a cement backer board .. - Q:The tile guy just wants to add fresh grout, but doesn‘t that wood need to be replaced too. Help the work is to be done in 2 days.
- Is this tile in the shower? If so you need to pull up the tile and have a tile membrane installed on the floor to waterproof the area. If it is outside the shower the wood should be treated wood or it will bulge and crack the tile in the future. If it is treated wood then you can just lay replacement tile down. If they know what they are doing and have the appropriate help, then any tile job can be done in one day.
- Q:I was told that you can use slate (indoor/outdoor flooring) tiles outside on walkway if you mortar them over a concrete walkway.Do they have to be mortared to a concrete walk or is there another way to place the tiles?Part 2. - Depends on the kitchen or the living room. The Kitchen is generally 9mm. Living room in general 10mm

- I'm not certain what the dimensions of a 'standard terracotta' tile that you mention are but... we have a Spanish style roof, utilizing what is called Spanish Mission Tile, in which the tiles are semicircular in cross section and about 6 inches wide, by about 20 inches long. It is the type of tile that requires one column of tile INVERTED with the concave face upward, and the next column [on both sides] with the concave side down covering the edges of the adjacent up-curved tiles. The Mission tiles are NOT the kind in which one tile provides both the under' and over'' portion in a single tile. Our Mission tiles weigh 5 pounds each and we have 3,500 on our roof which totals out to roughly 17,500 pounds on a house of about 2,000 sqft. We [My father, Mother, myself (12 yoa), and my brother (8 yoa)] installed this roof ourselves back in 1954 and although it wasn't complicated, it was a whole lot of hard work. It took us almost an entire summer to do it. You may be able to get more info from the manufacturer from who we buy replacement tiles. - Why don't you go to Wal-mart, Target, The Home Goods store, Salvation army(visit one in a very good area of town). You can also go to a discount store that sale a variety of merchandise such as Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Big Lots to name a few. Good luck!
- Q:so i was wanting to lay some ceramic tiles down in a small room. right now in the room i think theres vinyl tiles and they r laid right on top of the pplywood floor. so im just wondering am i able to just lay the ceramic tiles right on top of the plywood floor after i tear up scrape up the old floor? any advice?
- Kat and Kevin, It is not absolutely critical to put down material over the plywood before tiling. It's just better to do so. Nowadays, most people use backer board on top of the plywood. This is because backer board doesn't shrink or swell due to changes in moisture content. However, I've seen and done tiling directly over plywood in the past. This is done when customers are on a strict budget. In most homes built with plywood sub floors, tar paper is usually used between the two layers of plywood sub flooring. This acts as a moisture barrier and prevents the bottom layer and floor joists from being exposed to moisture. (I have seen tiling work done directly over plywood and it has lasted, without cracks in the gout, for 20 years). Having said that, it's best to lay down something like backer board. Increasing the height of your floor can be a problem with any addition to the plywood sub floor. Sometimes doors or other items can be affected by the increased height. You can also use different thicknesses of backer board to prevent too much height, while still using the board.
