- Q: We‘re putting in new porcelain tile floors in the kitchen and bathroom. Should the tile go under the refrigerator? Should tiles go in before or after the new vanities in the bathroom? Any other general tips for a first-time tiler?
- You should put the floor in the room before you put any of the appliances in and for in the bathroom put the tile in the whole room then put the vanities in after that way if you sell the house or want to change out the vanities you won't have to change thew tile
- Q: I have laminate over plywood right now in a bathroom. I‘d like to peel that off and lay tile down. Do I need the cement board or can I just put the tiles right on the plywood? It would save a lot of time and energy if I can just lay the tiles on the existing wood.
- You can tile right over the plywood. It may be difficult getting the laminate off, but if it is 40 or 50 years old, it will be easier. Take an old knife and stick it under the edge of the laminate and see how easily the laminate comes loose. If it's easy, go for it. You may end up with some gouges in the wood, but that won't hurt anything if you're tiling over it. The thinset tile adhesive will fill in any gouges. Good luck! It's fun, and remember this: Grout takes away the sins of the tile, so if the tile looks rough once it's down, the grout will fix it beautifully. Have fun, too.
- Q: I have this ceramic tile in my bathroom (on the wall, not the floor). There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, except it is an incredibly ugly color. I would like to paint it, rather than rip it all down just to put up more tile. Any suggestions?
- Can you successfully paint ceramic tile with a conventional latex paint? No. It is too hard and too slick. Is the tile subject to direct contact with water? Is the bathroom vented well or is there a lot of humidity during showers? Where there is moisture or high humidity you will especially need to do it right or it will not last, it will blister and eventually those blisters will break and flake off. I would have it done professionally if I were you. Do a search for a competent bathtub re-finisher. The same process should work for the the ceramic tile. If memory serves me correctly it will involve cleaning, acid etching, re-cleaning, priming with a two part epoxy, and finishing with a two part urethane - or something similar to this procedure. Although not a one step process, it still should be cheaper than tearing out the old tile and re-installing new. Be sure the re-finisher offers a warranty on his work - I have seen professionally refinished tubs blister and peel particularly where water collects or where soaps and shampoos are left on the surface for extended lengths of time. One note about the two part expoxies and urethanes - they stink very badly. You will want to be able to open windows and ventilate the house well if they are used.

- Q: Does anyone know where I could find a (preferably antique) terracotta roof tile? I am finding companies that import these tiles, but they sell 100 at a time, while I need 1-3.
- Call any roofing supply store in south Florida, Arizona, Texas, Southern California, Nevada or any southern US state. They are used extensively. Actually they are quite easy to make. Originally they were made by using moist, flat terracotta clay and it was formed over a mans upper leg to get the shape, then put aside to dry.
- Q: I‘m planning to tile up my space. It‘s a 27 square meters. I‘ve calculated the number of tiles. It will be around 140 to 150 pieces with extra tiles. How much or how many bags of tile adhesive will I consume for the 27 square meters space using 150 pieces of tiles? or What is the area a bag of tile adhesive could cover? Can you show me a computation.
- You don t say what size tile it is and what your going over as far as a substrate. It makes a difference. Since I familiar with the coverage in s/f and your post suggests you came from the states I ll use a s/f format and some generalizations. Assuming you have a larger tile you should be using a larger notched trowel.1/4x3/8 but you may want to use a larger 1/2x1/2. I ll go off of a 1/4x3/8 trowel. A standard 50# bag of thin set will cover an area of 60/70 s/f using a 1/4x3/8 trowel. Splitting the difference and using 65 s/f per bag, divide 65 into the 290 s/f you have. Or 4.46 bags. So you ll need 5 , 50# bags of thin set using a 1/4x3/8 trowel. If your using a different size trowel , all bags have a coversion chart on the back to figure your coverage. - Q: The tile of my garage is 10 years old. The house was abandoned and I bought it. The tile that was used was a textured ceramic tile. I‘ve tried brushing it and washing it with different products but it goes back to a dusty look. Any ideas on how to bring it back to life other than paying to get it polished by a professional. - If you don't want to pay for the labor to have it cleaned, you will be the one to do it yourself. Elbo Grease. Get some Tile Acid Cleaner from the Home dpot/Lowes, and a couple of hand held scrub brushes, some plastic bristles, some metal bristles, (to see which works best). Get a spray bottle, poor the acid into it. do not delut with water. Not until after it has sat on it for 5 min and you have scrubbed and scrubbed. Then spray with water (lightly Misting) and wipe up with disposable towels. Dont forget the rubber gloves. After the entire floor is finished or until you are satisfied (or if you want to do in Stages) wait until entirely dry and get some Tile Sealer and begin to apply. Pay attention to the grout lines first then mop all over the tile. The cost for materials will be about $50--$70 But the labor is where the real money is. Have Fun I do not envy you.

- Q: hi guys,i had a new shower which was leaking (no waterproofing where it was leaking from..), therefore i have taken off some of the tiles where the water was leaking from and i have waterproofed it with the paste + fibreglass. before i tile, i would like to have a shower to make sure that the water wont leak. am i able to do that? in theory i dont see a problem, but is it ok to get the waterproofing membrane so wet? thanks
- getting it wet and/or testing it is fine, don't get any soap or other chemicals on it that may interfere with the bonding of the tiles, you will also need to let it dry sufficiently before tiling
