Q: Hi, I was wondering if the house appraisal for a house with all hardwood floor was higher than it is if the house has all tile. Thanks!
They would be the same. There is no place to adjust for individual items on a appraisal like flooring in the sales comparison approach. The appraiser can adjust for condition, age, effective age, quality of construction and they fall in to poor, fair, average, good and very good. One issue would be who wants a home will all tile flooring. The only place on an appraisal to adjust for flooring would be the cost approach and if the home is older than 5 years, no one puts any weight on the cost approach. I think real hardwood flooring would sell faster than all tile. Tile is nice in the baths or kitchen. Pergo and Laminate flooring is a cheep way to go and give you no more value than cheep carpet.
Q: I have a new bathtub with Durock cement board installed around it and I‘m ready for tile. I just got a guy out to give me an estimate for doing the tile work around the tub and he said the Durock would have to be primed first. I‘ve heard you‘re supposed to put the tile directly on the Durock, not paint it. Now I don‘t know what to do. Is he wrong? If he‘s wrong, do I hire someone else or just question him? He did another (non-tile related) job for me and did an excellent job, so I trust him, but I‘m nervous about this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
I don't see how priming it would have any advantage. I tiled over some a couple years ago and have had no problems at all. I would think the adhesion would be in question if you are basically adding a layer of paint in between. You don't prime concrete before you lay tile flooring so why would you do otherwise to a cement board? I would ask him for is reasoning behind it. If it sounds like BS and a way to add some time to the job hire someone else.
Q: I am about to redo my bathroom, and I Absolutely hate corners. They get dirty and are hard to clean plus I think they are ugly. So as far as tile is concerned is there something like a bent tile for an inside corner such as from floor to wall which will eliminate corners. Imagine if you will a quarter pipe use by skaters. If nothing exists where could I go to get custom tiles made.
American Olean, Summitville and I m sure there other makers make a cove tile meant to be used of flooring corners between the wall tile and floor tile. You can see them in commercial applications allot. I don t see why you cant adopt the same concept to walls. There is also a base tile used for showers called an A 3401 that you could use in the same way. There is a whole color range in in 4x4 and 6x6 tiles. These are nice but basic tiles . Many manufacturers make these, including Florida Tile, Dal Tile and Interceramic that I can think of. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I would like to know what steps to take to prepare the concrete floor for ceramic tile. Part of the floor is cement and part is painted. Do I have to prepare the painted portion before tiling?
Rent a floating machine and skim the floor with thin set mortar. That eleminates imperfections in the slab, giving you a first class substrate for your tile. If the paint on the concrete is tight (not flaking or peeling) you should be able to skim right over it. The machine is a large, electrically driven circular trowel that really smooths things up.
Q: How to judge the quality of tiles?
First, look at the surface tile color Market tiles of various types, color is also a wide variety, according to the tiles of the variety and technology, tiles can be divided into anti-skid brick, polished tiles, tiles, glazed tiles, micro-brick and other types. If the quality of tiles according to the grading also has a variety of grades, mainly divided into excellent products, qualified products, and other goods. To check the quality of tiles and their own post-paste only need to be carefully observed through the problem can be found, the quality of their own tiles is relatively poor need to replace the tiles are mainly reflected in the tiles surface cracks uneven, corners are not Floor tiles, although the surface looks bright, but the glaze layer surface color problems or glaze layer or glaze layer of inclusions spots. The quality of the tiles after paving the main inspection of the overall surface of the flatness in the range of two meters is not greater than two millimeters, between the brick and brick joints are not greater than 0.5mm, seam flatness in the length of 5m No more than 3mm, if more than the above data within the range are unqualified. Second, the percussion test tiles installed with or without hollowing In the room, around the room with a small iron bar and other special inspection of the wall hollowing the tool, gently tapping the four corners of the tiles and the middle of the sound crisp no hollowing, if detected the problem of hollowing, should be marked out, Timely eradication with floor tiles. Third, in the tiles on the splashing water detection In the kitchen, the bathroom has a drainage slope requirements of the floor tiles paved tiles, in check their water is smooth, in the slope above a lot of water can be detected. After pouring water in the above, waiting for a moment, see where there is water to show that the floor tiles paved uneven, or to the water slope is not enough.
Q: The tile in my shower floor got torn apart
use a stanley knife to scrape out the grout.remove the tile using a hammer and a bulster or a old chissel always work from the middle avoiding damage to the other tiles.next use the hammer and bolster to chip up all the old adhesive next spread the new tile adhesive on the new tile lay it and check that its not sticking out in front of the other tiles.make sure its level with them.once dry after a thew hours then you can grout it.
Q: Having done some work in the bathroom we would like to reuse some of the tiles we took of which arent broken, does anybody have any suggestions as to how we remove the adhesive and grout so that they can be reused?
I tile every day of my life, and have been re-mediating an 11,000 sq. ft. floor since the floods. I suggest a Diag. grinder. What matters more than HOW, however, is the substance used to hold the tile. Adhesive or Mortar? For grout removal use a diamond blade on the grinder, and run the blade along the edge of each piece of tile. I also flip the tile over and GENTLY grind off as much THINSET as possible. To re-use, even those not totally clean, use a thinner spread of MORTAR and press, until flush with any adjacent. Steven Wolf Just my two sense
Q: I'm laying ceramic tile in my bathroom which I've never done. Any suggestions? I was also just thinking that it'd be neat to put the same tile as a shower surround. Would that be difficult? What do I need to do for that?
Yes you can put the same tiles on the wall as on the floor. Just be careful about the size of the tiles (speaking of ceramic tiles) for the wall. The bigger and heavier the tiles for the wall the more craftsman ship is needed to keep them adhered or from slipping until dry. You need the same thing for the wall as you are using on the floor. A tub of Mastic, a notched trowel, tape measure and a tile cutter and grout joint spacers. After tile is set, let dry for at least 24 hours. Then you'll need grout, a bucket , grout sponge, a rubber float (or grout float). And grout sealer.
Q: I‘m having linoleum put in my kitchen and I‘m want to prep the floor. We already tore the carpet up and we weren‘t sure if we should clean the carpet adhesive off the ceramic tiles, or remove the tiles from the concrete.
You ll have to remove the tile so any lines won t telescope thru .There is a process to coat over the tile but I m against it. You can t take the tile up and scrape the thin set down or sweep well and pour a self leveling compound over all the thin set ridges.Scraping down the thin set is a hard ,slow ,dusty , dirty, process but well worth it it the long run. Any questions you can e mail me GL
Q: A 15 foot by 18 foot porch floor is to be completely coverede with 1-foot square tiles. White tiles are to cover the center of the floor and green tiles are to form a 2-foot wide border around the white tiles. How many green tiles and how many white tiles will be needed?/. help plz. can you show work thanks very much.
this is really just an area question. If it helps you to see it, grab a piece of graph paper. Each sqare represents one till. Mark of 18 tiles in one direction and 15 in the other. Complete the rectangle. Then, shade in the other 2 food wide border. That two tiles in each direction around the outside. Shade the other border. Those are your green tiles. What's the length and width of the inner (white tiles)? Find the area of the whole floor: 18 ft x 15 ft. = 270 tiles Find the area of the white part (unshaded center tiles). (18-2(2))(15-2(2)) = 116 tiles The area of the green part is the area of whole floor - area of white part o= area green part. Since the tiles are 1ft^2 the number of tiles is the same as the area in feet.
