- Q:How can i get hair dye stains off tiled flooring?
- I would try a magic eraser.
- Q:can you use marble tile for counter top
- Counter Top. Marble tiles (although expensive) crack w/in time. Luckily they now have imatation marbel tiles. You should look into them.
- Q:dont know how much to charge to install tile backsplash on kitchen wall with 100sq/ft, please let me know am new and started in this business??
- with backsplashes, you cannot charge a sq ft price. They are time consuming and usually have lots of detail. 100 sf seems like a lot for a backsplash. Generally, they are in the 20-40 sf range. I am in eastern USA. I have a flat minimum of $ 450. But as the detail increases, so should the price because it will take you much longer.
- Q:How can I remove ceramic tiles from a bathroom wall without damage the wall itself, as I want to paint the wall. Would steam help loosen the glue used?
- The tiles are held on with grout, not glue. It all depends on where these tiles are and the condition of the wall behind them. Do any of the tiles have cracks? Is there any black mould growing at the edges where the tiles meet a wall or the tub? But before I go any further - If the tiles are surrounding the tub, aka tub surround or shower stall, then don't use only paint on plain dry wall. It just won't work... well, it will work, but not for long. You'll have to replace the dry wall within months! Now, to start you need to crack a tile or two, break it from the wall, scrap the rest off with a strong flat metal tool (some call them putty knives). The more moisture behind the tile the easier the tiles come off. Some tiles will be so adhered it will take the drywall paper or drywall with it, and you will have to either replace the drywall or mud it, then sand it flat and prime it. You can't get away with this, no matter how you try. It is the way of the tile, so to speak. To replace the wall or part of it there is a fairly new product on the market that is highly water resistent - nothing in this world is water proof! All succumbs to water, eventually. - you will find it at Home Depot , or any other building supplier, and it looks like concrete. Heavy as hell, and sold in sheets like drywall. You have to use a skill saw to cut out the size you need, and use screws to adhere it to the 2x4's that makes the room's frame.
- Q:I have a rental that currently has sheet vinyl in the kitchen that is in bad shape. I am considering putting in self adhesive floor tiles over the vinyl. I have installed similar flooring in a bathroom but used inexpensive tiles. It looked good, but the tiles tended to slide. I‘m thinking it was because I used bargain tiles rather than better quality.I just need comments as to longevity and problems you might have encoutered with self adhesive tiles. Also, do you have any particular brand or type you recommend?
- ok well the self stick they do sell an extra bond liquid which is clear and makes your tile much stickier and if that linoleum is shot at the point were it is coming up you cant go with the self stick cause the bad areas it will show how bout linoluem over linoleum and this liquid stuff is clear and tacky in like an hour or 45 min an can use on the linoluem too i think going right on the linoleum to the self stick which i find are terrible but are much better with this liquid which is whitish or clear its not glue
- Q:Can I install vinyl tiles in a bathroom. Will it shift over time and look bad. How does moisture affect vinyl tiles?
- It depends on the surface you put them on and the quality of the tiles. In most cases, with cheap peel and stick tiles that adhere to the surface below, they will tend to shrink, curl up at the endges and peel back after a while. It's not so much moisture as temperature changes and poor durability of the thin vinyl and poor adhesive. I'd recommend you use the Home Depot Allure line of peel and stick floating vinyl floor tile that is made by Trafficmaster. I just did a friend's bathroom with that product last weekend and was very impressed. The tiles stick to each other instead of the floor surface beneath so you can put them down over any solid surface and moisture will not effect them. They have a 25 year warranty also. At about $1.79 per square foot it is a pretty good deal and installation is a snap. We covered her entire 6' by 8' bathroom floor in less than 2 hours, including all the cuts around the toilet base and doorway. All you need to install it is a metal framing square or tee square, a sturdy pair of scissors, a measuring tape and a utility knife. Cool product. They make versions that look like tile and others that look and feel like real wood. We used the wood and it looks great. I've also used the Trafficmaster direct adhering commercial grade peel-and-stick tiles in areas that had moisture (an entryway and a powder room) with no problem but I made sure I had good birch plywood underlayment and I sealed it before laying the tile and also ran a bead of silicone caulk around the edges.
- Q:We have recently had our bathroom refitted, and tiled floor to ceiling with large ceramic tiles in a brick pattern. However now finished it is obvious that they are uneven. The tiler said it is the tiles. Is this likely or is it just a bodged job - he re-platerboarded the walls prior to tiling so they should be flat?
- Most tiles are made to be flat and there are some that aren t. On occasion ( and I m not defending your tiler) tiles can be warped and uneven. Especially when you get into the bigger sizes or tiles that are a bit cheaper. Porcelains tend not to do this but unfortunately some times happens in ceramics. I d have to see a bare or uninstalled ( several tiles) and look at them. So if you have extra tiles look carefully at a hand ful. Set them on a flat surface , look down the edges or use a straight edge on them. Like I said, I m not defending him or her, it does happen and no amount of adjusting will fix a warped tole. It they knew about this while setting the tile, you should have be notified. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:Or must I use Duraroc board or a similar item. Also can I use a ceramic wall tile on the floor ? I know they are of different thicknesses but would the wall tile hold up on a floor? Thanks for all the help.
- Since you didn't specifically state in a shower/tub area, the simple answer to a Can I? question is, Certainly My usual answer is, But you may be dissatisfied. With no offense to others; TILE is a very acceptable, industry standard. Obviously in a FORUM sense, exercising our Ammendment rights, we all have opinions. In a new construction or a re-hab I'd use concrete backer board (brand names aside) in a shower/tub area, and GREEN BOARD elsewhere. Sadly that isn't always the case in Tract housing. Floor Tile: Variances in thickness isn't an uncommon issue, given the process and material, but you can expect usual floor tile to be 1/4 to 3/8 thick. 3/8 being the heavy end of the variation. The issue is a bit more than the thickness however. Floor tile; decent or not is graded not in thickness, but in durabilty ratings, most dependant on Firing the tile in the first place. IE: #1 being the least durable...#4 or 5, being the most durable. Anyone who knows and sells tile should be able to advise that about a selection you make, and perhaps the vendor will even openly advertise it. Finally...Will the wall tile Hold up on the floor. In my bathroom it will, because I created a Grotto using Floor tiles in my shower area. Certainly even the highest rated Ceramic, glazed over tile, can chip if you dropped a Hair dryer on it, and depending on the surface color/finish, OVER the base clay color, you might find that a beautiful gray marbleized surface shows RED clay under? Porcelain tiles, often are finished through the entire thickness of the tile, but all of this suggestion largely depends on your research in attaining satisfaction. - Q:I need either of two types of tile one was a sheet of multicolor mosaic tiles the other is a creamy colour with a beige sort or swirly thing going through it
- Matching dis-continued tile can be a big problem..This is why whenever I do a tile job I leave extra or open boxes behind...The only thing i can say is check every tile store you can find.....Perhaps one has an odd lot left of leftovers...If you know who made the tiles that would help the search....If you E-mail me a photo to my profile I will take a look around my area when I am at the tile stores...Usually shipping can be arranged.
- Q:If you butt the all the tiles without any spacing, will the tile crack or bubble up due the expand and contract?
- Tile Without Grout Lines
