- Q: I'm not asking about an Intl Drivers License. I know about those. I just want to know if anyone has gotten a Japanese Drivers License on SOFA status while being in Japan.
- I was able to get a Japanese Drivers License (JDL) while having a SOFA license but... I was less than a month from my retirement date and already had my gaikokujin toroku (resident alien card) in hand. The official at the license bureau was very specific that I had to show my JDL from then on. My wife, who is a Japanese citizen, was able to get both a JDL and a SOFA license while I was still in since in order to drive a SOFA car one must possess a SOFA drivers license. It would seem to me that if you are in Japan solely under SOFA status you will not get a JDL but that if you are in Japan and have status other than SOFA (i.e. Japanese citizen or resident alien) you can have both.
- Q: I just gotta a new sofa bed today. And about 10 minutes ago I was trying to get it into my room. It just so happens that it won't go through my door way. Ok well it would fit through my doorway but it wont turn into my bedroom from the hallway because i have a small hallway.

- Also note that you might see yellowing of the color after about a year or so. Occasionally i've had this happen to me when the piece is in direct sunlight or rarely used. This may not happen to you, but its just good to keep in mind.

- Q: I am currently visiting Japan and am interested in a couple jobs on base and possibly staying here for a while if I can find a decent good paying job. My question: what is the most efficient means of getting a SOFA stamp to be able to apply for the jobs on base here...?Does anyone have experience with my situation?I am visiting my Japanese wife on my passport and have base access as I am now inactive military. One place (MWR) on base told me it would take 4-6 weeks after I turn in the paperwork to be sponsored by them to get a job.What other possibilities are there or jobs people know of that they need positions filled?Thank you all so much for your time and thoughts.
- You have to wait until you are offered a job on base from what I understand. There's no way around it. Here is the link for jobs: ask.afpc.randolph.af.mil/ Just go to job search and then pick Japan as the country. Maybe there's something open that your qualified for. P.S. Just wondering...........If your wife is Japanese, why do you need SOFA status to stay in the country for awhile? Haven't you applied for a spouse visa? ==================== ADD: I'm not sure I understand. If your wife is Japanese, then you would be eligible for a spouse visa through the Japanese government. It shouldn't be too hard to get one. SOFA status wouldn't even be an issue with that, in my opinion. But hopefully someone with more experience in Japan spouse visas will answer your question for you. ADD #2!: I understand your question now. I'm a dummy sometimes! (^-^) Your saying that if you have a spouse visa then you would be considered like a local national and therefore you would not be eligible for certain jobs that may require a security clearance, etc.........I'm not sure how to answer that for you though, the only thing I can suggest is contacting the Civilian Personnel office of the nearest military base to you and they should be able to answer that. - As far as the sounds go, so-fa (the couch) can sound a lot like so far (the two words). In fact, in lots of British English, the 'r' sound is not pronounced on the end (which makes them sound very similar or identical). In most of American English, there is a clear 'r' sound on the end of 'so far'... so in American English it is easy for us to tell the difference between the two. Work hard on hearing the 'r' sound at the end of words when it is there and pronounced.
- Q: i got the sofa for a great price but unfortunately the color was not my first choice. It is between military green and drab any suggestions on how to decorate it.
- Your sofa is actually a nice neutral earth tone and you shouldn't have a lot of trouble finding things to match it. One trick you can do is start looking wallpaper books, or magazine photos for examples of colors that have your shade of green in it. When you find one that appeals to you, take a sample and bring it with you when you shop for accessories. If you can't get a sample, then bring a big box of crayolas with you and match the colors of the crayons to the wallpaper. Keep your coffee table simple and classic. The sofa has a lot going on. You don't want anything too busy nor would you want stark modern lines.
- Q: I have an old wing back style sofa that I'd like to re-upholster. I've tried slipcovers, but they never fit right and they slip and slide and just look messy. Is this something I could learn to do on my own, or is this too much of an undertaking for a beginner? I can sew, and have a sew. machine (a regular Kenmore, not a heavy duty). Any advice is welcome, thanks.
- to reupholster a wing sofa is not easy if you have never done it before. To do it properly you will need to remove the old fabric and make the inside arm and inside wings joined. the outside wings and arms separately it is difficult to explain without having the sofa. I would recommend you look in your local Thompson or yellow pages for a professional. If you want to recover it yourself, you could make a slip cover in sections ( made to fit exactly) and then hand sew then to the existing cover, you can hide your stitches in where the wings and arms join the mack. Make a template by laying a piece of an old sheet or curtain over and pinning then cutting to shape, you then have the pattern pieces to lay on your fabric and cut. best of luck
- Q: The air sofas look so nice. Do they last or leak within six months? How about air matresses?
- Air mattresses will last longer than air sofas and air sofas are really not that high quality. I'd say an air sofa will probably last 5-12 months depending on how much it is used.
