Be sure the frame is hardwood like oak or maple. Make sure it has real coil springs tied 5 ways. If you find a solid color it will keep the cost down. Patterns need to be matched and cost more in labor. Thin cotton is a bad choice. Microseude will last well. A chenille or corduroy type with texture should wear well. A heavy cotton blend is fine. Once you get the sofa, buy a can of Scotchguard and spray the parts that you will contact with food. You do not need an expensive store spray plan. Sales people make a lot of extra money selling you that treatment. Sofas get very expensive but usually there are reasons they are worth it. Often it is how the frame is shaped and padded. Also better companies have better and more interesting fabric. Good luck shopping.

- If it's an older sofa, as you said, you'll never find a replacement. Other than a new sofa, re-upholstering or slipcovers are your only option. By the way, the zipper could be replaced.Just because cushions have zippers, they shouldn't be washed, as you found out.

- There are many things that go into affect in a leather sofa or sofa. 1. Construction- 5/4 thick solid oak or maple hardwood frame is the industry premium. The spring construction is very important and its gauge (meaning desity of metal) The bests spring construction is a coil spring like eight way hand tied or any other coil spring system. Note some coil springs have low wire gauge get what you pay for. No sag or sinous spring is also used and will do good as along as the gauge is good and frame is sturdy. Feel the frame and around for sturdness. 2. Leather quality. Alot of companies might use a cheaper leather or not a true leather. Top grain is the only way to go. Top grain needs to be at least on the seat, back and arms of the sofa. A company can use split leather on the side and back cause it will not be used, but it will wear evenly. 3. Why did your friends leather fade. Well did they take care of it? Was it a naturally characteristic of the leather? Remember you buy leather shoes and purses they too can fade. 4 Who is the manufacture and 1200 seems really affordable for a leather sofa. Remember a pair of leather boots can cost $300 dollars and a leather sofa has 10 times more stitching, padding and leather so 1200 is not very expensive. - Q: I need to buy a leather sofa or sectional but I am having a problem figuring out what color will go with my room. In addition to the walls I have new carpeting that has light browns and golds in it. Dark brown seemed like a good choice but my issue is the recliners.
- I think you are right to go with a beige color but nothing too light...more of a sandy or cashew color. You can add pillows, throws, pictures, candles, flowers, and rug to bring in the burgundy.
