- Q: I know this is the wrong section, but most people frequent this section instead of Home GardenMy fiance and I just bought a house, and almost the entire backyard is covered in ant mounds. We have only had an apartment before, so have never had to buy ant killer and not sure which kind is best. We need it to work really well and really fast. We are moving our dog into the house and she will be using the backyard in two days. So something that won't hurt her would be great, too. If not, we can work around that. I just need to know the best ant killer for the best price. Any help is VERY grealty appreciated!! TIA
- I just had to click here because I had to see why someone would need ant killer in singles and dating. LOL! they actually talk about this quite often over in Home Garden. I lurk there a lot when Family Relationships stress me out too much. what kind of ants? If they are fire ants then you will need something specifically for them. Most home improvement centers and hardware stores carry them. You put the killer out once a season. Andro is the brand that seems to work best for fire ants (I second the pellets over the powder). if these are other types of ants then Orange Oil (about 1/4 cup to 1 gallon of water) sprayed on the ant mound when they crop up will kill the ants and is non toxic to pets. If can't find orange oil (usually in the cleaning section of the hardware stores. it's a natural disinfectant used in homemade cleaning supplies), then Terro makes a liquid ant killer that works very well and very fast. You only have to keep the dog away from the product until the ants eat all of the product. A little goes a long way. I usually only have to apply it once a year. A homemade version of the terro product uses jelly (flavor doesn't matter) or corn syrup and boric acid. You mix 2 tablespoons of boric acid to 1/4 cup of jelly or syrup and place it where the ants can get to it and keep your dog away from the product until the ants eat it all. all of the products and home made methods I have recommended, I have used and they do work. And I have dogs.

- Easy Baked Beans Source: Better Homes Gardens 4 slices bacon 1/2 c chopped onion 2 (1-pound) cans pork and beans 2 T brown sugar 1 T Worcestershire sauce 1 t prepared mustard Preheat oven to 325° F. Cook bacon until crisp; drain, reserving 2 tablespoons drippings. Crumble bacon. Cook onion in drippings until tender; add with bacon to beans, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and prepared mustard; mix well. Bake uncovered in 1-1/2 quart casserole for 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours. Makes 6 servings

- You probably mean herbs, not spices. Most spices grow in tropical or subtropical areas. Herbs can be grown in the home garden in Northern America and Europe. I've listed a link for growing herbs. Just stay away from the mints-they are too invasive for a planter box.
- Q: I can't bring my cat in this winter - her kitties are up in the roof of my garage and i can't get up there because it wont support my weight. So she's going to have to stay in the garage until her kitty's grow up or she brings them down or something...There's a little indent above the window where she gets up there and i could shove a bed up there or something but i need a way to heat it. Makeshift or homemade would be best, because we only have a tsc(no pet stores) and they only sell one size heated pet mat and it's $100. - In okorder /, not the thin ones that fold down to the size of a pack of cards because those tear very, very easily. Cut or fold it to the size you want. My local Sports Academy sells the emergency/survival blankets for about $7.00. I would think that most outdoor / sporting goods stores would sell them. Then go to a fabric store and get some material like a fake sheep fleece or fake fur to make the rest of it. Though, frankly, you could probably just put the blanket into a pillowcase.
- Q: Although chipmunks are cute and fun to watch, they can be very destructive with their underground tunnels. My neighbor's brick paver patio is caving in because of this. My garden is full of holes because they like digging out my tulip bulbs. They gnaw on them a bit and then leave them in the sun to die. Is there something I can put on the bulbs when I plant them so that the chipmunks will leave them alone? Is there something I can put in my garden that will keep the chipmunks out? My neighbor has tried several things without success including baby powder with cayene pepper. The chipmunks are also destructive if they get trapped. Last year, one got trapped in my garage and damaged the weather stripping on the bottom of the door in an attempt to get out. Is there anything that I can put down that won't harm them but will keep them away?

- Go to a gardening store, and ask them what type of rose is hardiest in your area. I have wild roses at my house, and although I do not have a green thumb, they survive. We even moved them with us in our last move. Also, the gardening store should be able to give you specific advise on care.
