- Hi Emmylou - Have you read the instructions in the lighting kit? It should explain whether or not the intensity of the light, the color of the light, and the light itself would be harmful to a betta. I would say not as far as harming the betta since night lights put off very low light. When the sun comes up the night light will turn off, so the betta will have natural light throughout the day and a little while of low natural light until nightfall. If this green night light puts out some high intense light I would return it for a regular light so you have the control over when it is turned on and off. Personally I think that would be a clever night light and a very pretty one for the betta as it shouldn't be very intense at all. :) Have a good day!

- Nothing solid is a perfect absorber or perfectly transparent, so yes anything solid reflects light. The reason you can see your hand, or a dark colored thing, or an uneven surface, is that it reflects light toward your eyes. You could theoretically see a dark colored thing by contrast, by noticing an area that's darker than the surroundings, without it having to reflect any light. But in practice even dark colored things reflect some light.

- You have to be careful about placement, but a 500 watt quartz light will produce the same heat as a 500 watt portable heater. Electricity produces 3.4 btu's per watt. Lights, heaters, tv toaster, cell phone charger, all produce 3.4 btu's per watt.
