- Very basically house lights shine on the the audience, stage lights on the actors. There are any number of types of stage lights, the most typical being par cans. Lights that bathe the entire stage in color are generally referred to as wash lights, and lights that highlight only a part of the stage are spot lights (a moving spot light is called a follow spot). Past that you get in to ellisoidals, fresnels, moving yoke lights, and specialty lights like gobos, oils etc.

- It is misleading but has a grain of truth. It's a bit like saying 'ice is really steam'. It kind of misses the point. Ice and steam behave very differently even though they are made of the same types of atom. Electromagnetic radiation is one form of energy. And light is just one type of electromagnetic radiation. Matter is another form of energy (energy hugely compressed into a small space). Light has many properties which matter does not, and vice versa. Maybe the video will help.
