- Hey Marie.....light travels in wavelegnths much like the waves of an ocean travelling to the shore. When something interrupts or alters the course of these wavelegnths (such as light travelling through a prism) then these wavelengths (ripples) must do a detour and this is called refraction (not to be confused with reflection). It is the same reason that we sometimes see a rainbow in different mediums. Each waverlegnth of light actually has a corresponding color to it.....hence the rainbow. A Frenchman named Fresnel figured out some fancy mathematical equations to explain all of this and when you see an old lighthouse up close you will see the fresnel lens that it supports. It uses this theory so as to take a small light source indide if it (such as an old whale oil lamp) and then magnify and refract the light into a seemingly brighter appearance. Light can bend (refract) and when it does this then corresponding colors appear due to a change in wavelegnth (it makes a detour) and the intensity of the light may appear greater or smaller.

- If you hire an electrician, they should be able to give you more than one light source from the same switch. Maybe you could turn that one light into two wall sconces on either side, possibly adding a light from above as well? If they were all put them on a dimmer switch you could more easily control the light too. I really don't like ugly medicine chests either. My advice is to take them out all together and hang a nice mirror there instead. Recently I racked my brain on a small bathroom makeover that had no medicine cabinet, only a niche with glass shelves, opposite another mirror. It was so hard to find medicine cabinet that looked good, but having all your stuff on view isn't pretty either. This is because a yellow surface ONLY appears yellow because it absorbs all other frequencies of light but NOT yellow frequencies. because true white light is made up of all frequencies of visible light. (note: your light sources at home are generally not completely white they are missing some frequencies) So if you shine a white light on it the only light you will see is still yellow, all others are absorbed. If you shine a yellow light on it nothing is absorbed but the exact same wavelength of light is reflected off as when you used a white light. HOWEVER, in practice you would have to match the yellow light source exactly to the wavelengths of light that the yellow surface would reflect. It's easier to use white light because it already includes all of the frequencies of light that the surface would reflect.
