- Q: Just bought an area rug, and I can't decide if it looks good. The area is small - and I get the feeling that it closes it in even more. - Q: I went to a heritage craft festival last year, and there was a lady making rugs. It was at a Colonial period mansion, and she said the rugs were found in the storage of the family, and never finished. So she was using similar materials, and following the pattern to finish them. I guess it was rug hooking, but I don't remember her calling it that. She would take a very thick piece of wool and pull it through the backing to make a little loop, then, on the same piece of wool, just make a loop in the next hole, no knots, no cut pieces..she said the fabric was so tight and the wool so thick that it would hold it in, and eventually the bottom would become felt from walking on it (she showed me the older portions of the piece). Is that the same as regular modern rug hooking? it doesn't seem like it...does anyone know if this sounds right? does anyone rug hook like this? Thanks!
- There are many different rug making techniques still used today. A magazine called Piecework recently had an article about rug making similar to what you described. There are other publications dedicated to rug making. Try googling rug hooking and you can find a lot of information and hopefully can learn more about this technique.
- Q: we live in a rented apartment, we have carpet installed but we would prefer hard wood so much better. is there a way, inexpensive much preferred, to have hard wood over the carpet without damaging the carpet? hope to hear some interesting suggestions, thanks!!
- You can't put hardwood over carpet. The softness of the carpet would let the hard floor flex and would eventually come apart, break or crack.
- Q: What if I went to Home Depot and bought a sheet of rubber cut to just a bit less than 8' x 10' and then a piece of felt the same size - glue them together and pop the area rug on top?Would that work?
- Hi Blue Eyed Homo, I am a flooring associate that works at The Home Depot, and I know that some rug pads seem to be expensive, especially in your size. I've worked in other departments and been with the company for almost 10 years and I have yet to see a sheet of rubber that will sell in the store other than pan liner for tubs that would work in your situation. Also, you won't find at our store pieces of felt in that size. Plus, felt just won't be able to grip the rug properly especially if you have a hardwood floor. Did you check around your local stores flooring department? I think I may have a less expensive solution for you. Carpet padding, not rug pad, but the kind ppl place under their carpets. It may not look pretty but its made to not be seen anyway and it works great for big area rugs your size. Home Depot sells carpet pad in pre-cut 6ft. by 9ft. rolls or have your flooring associate there cut out a size for you. Bottom line....the carpet pad will be way less expensive than the rug pads we sell, and you'll still have a slip resistant surface for your new area rug for years to come. I wanted a neutral rug with a little blue and blue curtains, but I cannot find any rug that fits that description and I have looked at millions of rugs. I am thinking I should just settle for a plain blue rug and get a neutral curtain. My husband thinks we could get a blue rug and blue curtains, but I think that is way too much blue for one room.
