Q:bought home, tiles loose in shower, wonder if water damage is behind it: Tiles originally went on with an adhesive mortar and then grout. I suspect the grout fell out, and water softened the mortar and the tile fell off. Take the tile off and clean any loose mortar from behind it. Don't use the shower for a couple of days and let the area dry thoroughly. Buy some silicone adhesive that is not water soluble and re-stick the tile to the wall. Once it has been in place for 20 minutes, re-re-grout the tiles using a latex grout. Let it all dry a couple of more days and you are good to go.

Q:As in the tile you find as back splashes behind sinks.: I am a tile setter and also a professional flooring salesman and i will tell you that regaurdless of what paint you put on the tile it will not stay on forever as the tiles are glazed and then fired to set in the color that is already on the tile. That surface is impervious to anything. You can try epoxy paint but just be prepaired for when it will begin to crack and peel. Best of luck to you though.

Q:Our house was built in 1925. My husband is removing our bathroom floor tiles that haven‘t been touched since then...we had only vinyl tiles on top of the old. He discovered these tiles are extremely difficult to take out they are very hard tiles under the vinyl we have now. Then when he tried to remove the hard tiles he had to remove concrete like stuff and sand like stuff. It‘s been one hell of a job just to remove everything. He went down to the foundation of the house! I just started worrying now about asbestos. I remember how old homes have them. Is it possible there is asbestos in these? There is a lot of dust in the house because of the removal process. Anyone know? I have two small kids and I‘m petrified. I‘ve heard of vinyl tiles having them, but what about the other stuff in our floors?: Asbestos was used in everything: insulation, wall plaster, flooring, etc. But mostly in industrial setups (think fireproofing). Homes more often than not only had flooring and insulation that sometimes contained it. Most did not. 10s of Millions of people have been exposed and a few tens of thousands developed conditions due to it. About the same ratio have developed cancer due to fiberglass and that is considered to be safe by lawmakers. Asbestos related diseases happen so rarely that they can't even guess what the incident rate might be. Radon is proven to be at least 10x more dangerous. My opinion is you have nothing to worry about as long as no rubbish company tests the material and finds it positive. If you want to know, it costs about 20 to 30 dollars per item tested plus whatever fees they might collect to collect the test items. Actually you should be more concerned about lead in the paint. Any painted surface that was around back then will definitely have lead.

Q:I am thinking about tiling 2 bathrooms in a rental property and planning to use 12x12 tiles costing $1 each. I want to use the same tiles for bathtub surrounds as well as floor. Even in a small room the larger tile creates an illusion of larger space. The issue for the floor will be cutting, also as answer 1 states, but divisible is not as much the issue as how you square the room and where you set the center, allowing the most number of full pieces visible as possible. That's not only for aesthetics, but determining cuts and where the cut pieces will be least visible. If you have cove base molding you can assume 1/4 inch from the molding as the final grout line and throughout 1/4 inch is usual. What that does however, in your measuring is to add/subtract 1 inch for every 4 pieces of 12 x 12 tile. IE: If you think to tile in a 4 ft. wide area you will have to cut the tile at least on one side of that, allowing for the grout lines. Addressing wall tile size. I tiled my shower walls in a 16x 16 terra cotta but I don't advise it. The usual would be 4x4 or 6x6, in that size range. It's not impossible to use large tile but is more a challenge.You should use a rapid set mortar/mastic, still use spacers, even at 1/8 inch and set the lower course first, allow to dry/set 24 hours, then build your way up the wall. In my case with the size and weight I had to brace each tile to hold it in place. Given that these are rentals, I'd make the job as easy as possible, probably with smaller wall tiles, even mesh backed. In any case a poly blend mortar/quick set and the same in a sanded grout DOC

Q:Bathroom Tiling Job?: use underlayment for tile or vinyl flooring specially use for that surface to eliminate rough areas. Also it makes flooring even with adjoining rooms, The ply you are referring to the sub floor. The toilet flange gasket can make up the difference in height depending on buying number 1, 2, or 3. I would only use 1/4 underlayment.

Q:I need to re-set some tiles on a roof that have slipped and replace some others. Also, I need to re seal my flashing around my vents. What am I getting into, and how hard is it to work on tile roof?: the tricky part to working on a tile roof is staying on it. and not cracking any additional tiles. usually when i repair a tile roof i set up scaffolding there are a bunch of reasonss . the tiles sre heavy and hard to handle on just a ladder, the scaffolding offers a nice work area, and most important its alot safer, you can go to any rental store and rent scaffolding, when resealing around flashing and vents use a rubber butyl caulk for longer durability

What should I use? Then when my floors are even how do i put my tiles?: With all due respect; that wasn't a good idea to begin with. If asked I'd turn down the job. First of all the grout lines should have been considered; and the depression that exists. I'll assume you intend to BUTT each sticky tile to any other. At some pint; some portion of that will come in contact with grout lines. In a normal process of just walking on the vinyl tiles; the grout lines will become evident; under the vinyl. Essentially a glazed ceramic tile is glass; and is not pourous, or even designed to adhere anything to it. For a transition area you could either install more tile first, or fill the transition; perhaps even feathering it? Without knowing the WHERE of the gaps; it may not be aesthetically suitable in any case. To more directly answer your Q; but so much not if favor of stick on anything; I offer this. I do it or suggest it every time. Get a can of contact cement; regular base or water base. Peel the paper from the back of each tile. Brush or roll contact cement to the back of the tile as well as the surface to be covered. Let air dry, then stick, press, and hope. Steven Wolf

How long should this take? and can I just tile over the old tile or does it have to be removed? but mostly how long should it take me to do?: Sorry, I even have in no way heard of a spacing gadget. I in many circumstances basically use the little plastic spacers which you insert between each and each tile. I even have seen some people take an prolonged board and format marks on the board on the suitable spacing.
