- 1-1/4 thick of plywood. not osb or k3 board, but real plywood (2 layers 5/8th thick. then, when you lay your tile, use a polymer-modified thinset mortar, instead of a dry-set mortar. they have a powdered latex additive that helps it bond well to the plywood. of you look at the back of the bag it will tell you if it will stick to plywood.

- yes, you'll need a good underlayment. The reason is that the independent movement of the planks as weight loads the floor will cause torque between two planks, cracking the mortar and the grout and perhaps the tiles themselves. Its enough work to lay the tile that you definately don't want to do this without the underlayment. And I'm a guy that will lay tile over a well secured vinyl floor, so I'm not one of those there's only one right way to do it people. But in this case, you'll be unhappy with the results without a sanded plywood or cement board underlayment.

- I suggest that you first prep and fill your concrete and let dry. Next you should lay out some tile pieces on an area near your starting point fitting the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle. Next, quickly set the tiles in the mastic in the same pattern that you had them laid off to the side leaving at least about 1/8th gaps between the tile pieces. When you are finished, scrape off any mastic that does not have tile set in it. Repeat this process until you completely cover your floor. Allow to dry for a day and then fill the cracks with grout. Allow the grout to dry for a day and then do an acid wash to remove the grout residue.

- Tiles will crack for generally 3 reasons 1) Improperly prepared flooring - The floor needs to be sealed from moisture from below/exterior walls, and cleaned from any and all previous floor coverings (ie glues.residues from laminant or previous tiles). Highly recommended not to apply thinset to partical board or OSB as they call it here as the thinset aggravates the adhesives from the board. Best to use plywood. 2) Improperly applied tiles - There are specific thinsets for different floor coverings (ie, concrete flooring in basements, plywood, or even on top of existing ceramic floors) It is very important that the correct thinset is used, and that the application is uniform and complete underneath each and every tile. If there are air pockets under the tile, chances are very high they will break. 3) Cheap materials - You generally get what you pay for. Tiles at .60/sqft will break in your own hands. If you can snap the tile in 2 with your bare hands, how do you expect it to handle 200+ lbs. It sounds like it is possible that termites deminished the quality of the wood beneath the tiles, but you would be able to see yourself from the tile whether the tile let go from the thinset, or the thinset let go of the floor surface. If the bottom of the tile is caked with thinset, the problem is moisture in the floor (or your termites), if there is no thinset on the tile it was either not properly installed, or improper/poor thinset was used.

- Q: Hi, I am thinking about placing vinyl wood planks over the existing ceramic tile in my house and I wanted to know if it‘s possible. The tile isn‘t completely level due to the grout and obviously not all the tiles are exactly the same height down to the millimeter. I wanted to know 1. Is it possible to install vinyl wood plank over ceramic tile, 2. If so how level the tile floor has to be, 3. How would I go about leveling the floor, with an underlayment or with some sort of mortar, 4. If I use an underlayment do I still need to use the mortar to level the tile?Thank you.
- I would not lay vinyl over ceramic tile, especially if the tile isn't even. It will wear the tile out faster, and the tile won't look good over any surface that is not level. Remove the tile, then lay down some 1/2 underlayment plywood--or once the tile is removed, (and all the grout) and the floor is revealed, you may be able to lay the vinyl down over what's underneath. You can't put underlayment over the tile either because it has to be nailed down, and that extra layer will add nearly an inch to your floor--making any transition to other rooms uneven.
