- Q: How do I find roofers who are specialised in protection against invaders from outer space. I called 10 and they said they would call me back, but no one did so far. It must be really complicated.

I first became aware of this little plot after dealing with roofers for many years as a GC. After only a brief conversation with anyone on a roofing crew and you can only assume there are from another plant.
- Q: I have a low pitched roof so there isn't that much room up there hands and knees only.I have no eave ventilation but the ventilation is through the front and back of the house through triagle metal caps cut into the wood siding. I already have some R19 in the ceiling joists but was wondering would putting it in the rafters against the plywood holding the shingles also help insulate the living area of the house.
- Best way and easy cheap way is just roll out unpapered fiberglass over top of joist at right angles to existing insulation

- These are sheets of foam cut to size, they use a piece or steel wire to hold the foam up its cut some what longer then the width of the bal so it bends forcing it to dig into the joist.

- All versions of insulation are largely air that is kept from moving - air is a good insulator if convection - movement of heated or cooled air due to changes of density - is prevented. This assumes that a vapor barrier and caulking prevent actual air movement through the wall when a wind is blowing. Some insulators are also poor conductors of heat so the connection between inside and outside that might occur is broken. As it happens, glass used in fiberglass and minerals used in rock wool are actually pretty good conductors of heat in solid form but as fine particles and flakes they don't conduct well from one strand/piece to the next.

- To comply with UK building regulations all lofts must be insulated... Q22. How much loft insulation do I need? A22. To meet current Building Regulations you need 270mm of mineral wool insulation. 100mm between the ceiling joists and 170mm laid over the joists.
- Q: Does snow on the roof help or hurt my heating bill?
- It shouldn't matter. Here's why: If your attic is already well insulated and ventilated, there is insulation sitting on top of your drywall or plaster ceiling. Above that insulation is moving cold air. That air keeps your roof from rotting. The insulation creates a barrier between your living space and the moving air in the attic. You can differentiate homes with good insualtion from those without it--well insulated homes will have snow on their rooftops for a longer time. Additionally, well insulated homes are less likely to develop ice dams. So, I don't believe the snow on your roof should make any difference at all in your energy bill.
- Q: I am building a porch roof over an existing patio. The rafters are fabricated I-beams. I plan on putting aluminum soffit under the I-beams. On top of the roof I would like to put down a metal roof. I already put down 3/4" OSB and a rain/ice barrier. Do I need insulation and/or ventilation on top of the rain and ice barrier, or can I get away without it?
- You don't need insulation for this application. If you haven't purchased the metal yet I would recommend looking for a standing seam roof system that the panel does not come in contact with the substrate and does not use exposed fasteners. If in the future you did decide to enclose the porch and add heat you could insulate the ceiling and leave an air space under the decking that could be ventilated from the eave to the ridge. A cold roof assembly with proper ventilation will dramatically reduce the potential of the metal panels sweating.
- Q: I have read in some articles about roofing that it is recommended to use attic roof insulation in ones roofing. Is this true?
- It's advisable to insulate the roof area attic to help keep the rooms below warm as heat escapes through the ceilings, but not so much if there is insulation in the attic! It's personal preference. Cheers
- Q: Finally remembering to do so, before my family and I left the house for approximately 4 hours, I turned off the heat before leaving. When we came home I turned it back on, but was shocked to see that the temperature had dropped 4 degrees in that time. 4 degrees in just under 4 hours seems like a lot of heat loss, does it not? I've seen the insulation in our roof and it's just that sawdust looking stuff spread everywhere. I feel like I'm paying a lot of unnecessary dollars for heating: the air does kick on every hour or two and we keep the thermostat at 68.Is it reasonable for me to talk to my landlord about this problem and getting better insulation in the ceiling, and maybe in the roof? (the master bedroom, on the far corner of the house, is always 2-3 degrees below the rest of the house). Are my expectations to not lose a degree of heat or more per hour unreasonable? Would a typical landlord consider this a problem worth discussing?
- I never turn my heat or ac off when I leave the apartment. I'd say you can ask all you want but the landlord won't be listening to you. And I don't think 4 degree drop is a lot. And it does depend on what the weather outside is. If I had 68 degrees indoors I'd always have a cold. What is your monthly bill and which part of the country are you in? My bill is around $42 a month. I have insulated draperies, I use only one 40 watt bulb at my place. When it gets cold in here my 40 watt bulb will heat my place.
- Q: We bought a house and put new metal roof on over the shingles. (first please don't say, this or that should have been done, just what I can do now) Any how, we have put a lot of money into the house, roof, all new electrical, all new plumbing, etc., I had to make the house in a "living in condition" with a low budget. ............ the house does not have insulation in ceilings, this has to be done next summer. (budget) Any how, the metal roof has condensation under it, only in the ridge vent area. This drips a little and I need to fix it. Now, I know that insulation wouldprobablyy fix this, but we don't have the money right now, so I need help on what to do? Is there anything that with a $100 to $200 budget can be done? I have searched a little, and maybe use a "spray-on"insulation help? The area is where the gap is at the peak and where themetall overlaps the ridge vent. - Use kraft faced insulation for attics R-19. It won't fill the whole cavity, but will instead provide room for ventilation. Staple it tightmaking sure all gaps are filled. Next, hang sheetrock on the ceiling. My brother omitted this step and gets a lot of cold air bleed down. Then put on your pine. It wouldn't hurt to install a ceiling fan up there too, especially if you are using some sort of non vented gas fireplace or heater. They put out humidity.
