- Q: Details: The house is a 3 story house. When showering on the 2nd or 3rd floor, the living room ceiling leaked. Not just 1-2 drops but we had to get a bucket and you can see the staining on the ceiling. This was 4-5 years ago and we stopped using these showers. No further leaking when NOT using the showers. The contractor opened the ceiling today near the staining and turned on the showers. He said that there was no leaking. What happened? Any suggestions? Thanks.
- I have encountered this problem. It is one of two things. Either the rubber gasket at the drain is bad or the plumbers putty has failed at the drain. If you have a fiberglass shower pan, there is a metal plate attached to the drain by two screws. Once these are removed you have a collar which is screwed in to the mating piece on the underside of the pan. The other piece is glued to the waste line. Between the glued piece and the bottom of the pan is a rubber washer. This may be bad. I'd try removing the collar first and reapplying plumbers putty and reinstalling it. This can be done by using the handles of a pair of channel locks against the nubs that the screws go into. After doing that, test it. If it still leaks then it is the gasket. You will actually have to buy a complete assembly to get one as home centers don't sell them separately. It always amazes me how some plumbers want to start tearing out ceilings before checking the obvious. I can almost guarantee you that your leak is one of the two.
- Q: Why is the state of magnesium dichloride at room temperature?
- Solid, is a crystal.
- Q: I have a 120 year old house w/ a flat roof, no attic and no insulation. I have a dropped ceiling on the top floor - drop is about 5". Ceiling tiles are not insulated. I plan on getting insulation and having it rest on top of the ceiling tiles.I live in Pittsburgh, PA where we get hot summers and cold winters. What would be a better insulation - traditional fiberglass or radiant? Radiant appeals to me since installation is easier, but if it won't be as effective, I won't do it. Thanks!
- get cellulose. fiberglass will melt in you have a fire, then your house will burn. cellulose while it is paper, will not burn. it has borax and other fire retardant things in it.
- Q: Fiberglass sound-absorbing ceiling features
- (GB9624-997) anti-tide anti-sag: in the room ~ temperature 40QCIX summer relative humidity is 90%, the size of the stability
- Q: I have a partially finished basement, hardwood floors above. What can I do soundproof the unfinished ceiling? I'm not planning on finishing, I want that area to serve as a hang out spot for the family and I don't want to worry about fiberglass dust.
- To sound proof you need to do two things, isolate and absorb. This means that the surface facing the basement should not be in direct contact with the floor above and some sort of material with adequate mass needs to be between to absorb the sound. It sounds like you don't want to go overboard with this project so I would suggest insulation batts and a dropped ceiling. Dow makes a 'safetouch' insulation that does not create dust and that you do not need to use a mask while installing (though I still would). There are newer styles of dropped ceilings out there now with a lower profile that use tracks that are relatively easy to install. I think one brand is called CeilingLink. This will look nice, block a lot of sound and allow access in case it is needed in the future. Best of luck, and maybe consider a radon gas detector.
- Q: Cast-in-place floor (ceiling position) Reinforcement protective layer is not enough, local steel exposed. I intend to use epoxy resin mortar
- Epoxy resin 100, curing agent ethylenediamine 8, toughening agent dibutyl phthalate 12, diluent acetone amount. Epoxy resin warm water bath after adding toughening agent, diluent stir well, before the application of curing agent and cement appropriate, stir well, run out again. After the paint is scratched with a scraper, it is finally taken with a hair dryer (hairdressing).
- Q: What method of repair and what is the material used.
- If you re-do the ceiling may be time-consuming solution: with putty approved twice or so to fill the cracks on the line and then brush on the bottom of a brush on the bottom into a new one.
- Q: What is the candle effect?
- Spontaneous combustion, is blood shortage, and charcoal increases.
- Q: Sorry for shouting,,lol,,,want to replace 40 year old fibrglass insulation in basement ceiling with new, joist are 16 inches apart and 2x8 sized,,,what size insulation should i use
- You provided all the information that DOESN'T matter and none of the information that does. If the basement is heated, FORGET the insulation. The only thing it is doing is dampening sound, and there are better options for that. If the basement is unheated, the answer depends on local climate. You need more insulation in Alaska than in Hawaii.
