Q: I have 1993 Seville 4.9. I got a new EGR valve but it didn't help. I tested it with vacuum pump, it won't hold pressure at all, same with old one. Is that new EGR valve bad or just different type of EGR that vacuum pump won't work? Thanks!
The first source, pages 20-22, lists all 9 basic types of EGR valves. Not all the types are vacuum operated, but check out #5 and #6 - they behave very differently from each other without a real live exhaust system connected to them.

every turbo will have a dump valve(waste gate) to regulate the boost to the engine Dump valves are fitted to the engines of turbo charged cars and sit between the turbo outlet and the throttle body. When transitioning from a boosted state to a closed throttle state (as in between shifts), due to inertia, the turbo continues to pressurize air, but the closed throttle prevents the compressed air from entering the engine. In this case the pressure exceeds the preset spring pressure in the dump valve and the excess pressure is bled off to atmosphere. Even with a dump valve the compressed air acts as a brake on the turbo (slowing it down), because the pressure on the backside of the turbo is at a higher pressure than on the front side (and the air actually wants to flow through the turbo backwards). A blowoff valve is a more elegant solution to this problem by allowing the turbo to freewheel when the throttle is closed (equalizing the pressure on both sides of the turbo). Unlike a dump valve a blowoff valve can be used at multiple boost settings without reconfiguration. Blowoff valves are sometimes incorrectly called dump valves because they serve a similar function, but they are very different solutions to the same problem.

The valve head is larger then the valve port, so it's not coming out of there. Pull the head.
Q: Hi guys, i asked a question before pertaining to the amount of cylinders and asking if it meant V4 or V6 or whatever.I actually meant to say VALVES, not cylinders. I am sure this is a 4 cylinder engine. I haven't had a car that broadcasted the number of VALVES before. Another car I had broadcast that is was a 3.3 Liter V6 right on the engine.Is there a mathematical relationship between VALVES and cylinders, or would my car be braodcasting 16 VALVES, because a 4 cylinder doesn't typically HAVE 16 valves, or what is the story??Recently, I was looking at an altima, and it said 24 valves. All engines require one intake and one exhaust valve per cylinder. Period. That said, some engines are equipped with two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. So a four cylinder engine will be labeled as either an 8 valve or a 16 valve engine. And so forth for a six cylinder or an eight cylinder engine. In the motorcycle world, there are the rare engines equipped with either three valves per cylinder or five valves per cylinder. So if a manufacturer is advertising the number of valves per cylinder right on the car or engine, you can bet that engine is equipped with four valves per cylinder. 4 valves per cylinder is more expensive to manufacture than a 2 valve engine, but there is better performance with 4 valves per cylinder. To the last part of your question, 24 valves equates to a 6 cylinder engine. 24/4 = 6 (cylinders). I know of no engines with 6 valves per cylinder. Also Altimas are not available with 8 cylinder engines. Good Luck

Some cars have little hydraulic gizmos to keep the valves more or less where they're supposed to be. Doing without them is, according to some, a tad more precise, but you have to have the valves checked now and then. (On my old Celica, it was a 60k maintenance item.) It will probably run a hair better afterwards.
Q: I did a compression check on my 350 chevy. I have low compression of 175psi on one cylinder.The other seven cylinders range from 195psi to 205psi Could the valves be too tight on the cylinder with 175 psi compression?
Chev engines have hydraulic lifters, keeping the valves adjusted correctly at all times. 20 lbs isn't much to worry about anyway, but if you want dump a little oil (about a tablespoons worth) into that cylinder and recheck it. If the compression jumps up, then your rings are getting weak. If not, you may have a leaky valve.
