Q:My bike has now 6200 miles on the odometer. The manual says that a valve adjustment should be performed every 6000 miles. But the bike runs fine. Can I just have the valve checked or should I have them adjusted even though the bike is fine? What will happen if I just keep riding it?: In reality, lots of bikes go their entire lives without a valve adjustment. In my opinion that is a great way to ruin a bike though. They have a maintence schedule for a reason. If a valve isn't seating, it can hurt performance and the valve will not be able to transfer heat to the head. That can burn a valve and cause detonation. You have to check valves to adjust them, and the labor for just checking will be nearly the same or identical to doing the adjustments. I do all my own wrenching, so money isn't really an issue, but if I were you, I would just bite the bullet and take it in.

Q:How do i use a valve spring compressor. It looks like a c-clamp, so don't tell me how to use a smaller one, but the bigger one.Thanks: the forked end of it will go over the spring part and the solid will work on the valve ,you can only use this one if the head is off though,the smaller ones work good if the head is still on the car,the c-clamps style though is the best one to use its safer and wont allow the springs to fly off,good luck.

Q:Ok, so I took my car in for maintenance (Mustang GT convertible 2002) and the mechanic told me the valve gaskets needed to be replaced and when he gave me the estimate, they were two seperate charges for valve gaskets and valve covers, total of about $250.00 not including labor. So I called the dealership to inquire about the price and I asked the parts guy for a price on valve gaskets and he was like, I don't know what you mean, we have valve cover gaskets but nothing says just valve gaskets? I told him to give me the price anyways, thinking I would ask my brother (who hasn't tried to help me anyways) and it was $60.00 for both (I need two). How can this be if the other guy was charging me $250.00 for different parts? Help!!! Frustrated and confused, I don't know anything about cars :(: LOL. No. You don't get away that easily. The valve cover gasket only keeps oil from splashing all over the engine bay. It literally covers the valves, sealing the engine interior away from the general environment. Th head is the part of the engine that the valve cover sits on. It contains the valves, and either the camshaft or the rods that lead to a camshaft deeper in the engine, and of course the rocker assembly. You have to remove all those big bolts along the casting to break the head free, and you'll need a torque wrench to get the pressure right when you're reinstalling it. The head gasket seals the tops of the cylinders [incorporated in the bottom of the head] to the cylinders themselves [bored into the block proper.] Have fun!!!!!

There is a camshaft that acts on the valves, and there is a predetermined amount of play or slop in the system that is within specs. As the valve seat wears, the valve gets pulled further into the head, and this lessens the play as it wears. If it gets too tight and fails to have any play, the valve won't be held tight against the seal and it will leak, lose power and possibly burn the valve. So yea, get it set. Also may want to factor in timing belt cost and ask about that and water pump as those aer replaced together.
