- Q: I want to tile all around the bathtub alcove in a bathtub/shower. The previous people only put a small section of cement board, about 2' or less high right behind the tub faucet area. They put regular wallboard in the rest of the alcove, and the same behind the vanity area. Should I put cement board as wallboard in the entire alcove area, or only on the wall that contains the tub/shower faucets, or what it the most appropriate? Should I put green board behind the vanity area? Thanks!
- The best method is to put cement board in the entire tub surround, not just in the faucet area. Steam from showering can cause damage to drywall if there are any cracks in the tile or grout. You can use green (moisture resistant) drywall or blue (moisture and mold resistant-preferred) drywall in the rest of the bathroom. Make sure the gaps between the cement board panels are sealed with modified thinset. You can do this just before you tile.
- Q: While chewing gum, my molar crown fell off. I was panicking and i used my tongue to place it back. I got home and i have some temporary teeth cement I was going to use, but I tried to very gently pull the crown back out and it won't come out. Should I use a little more force or should I just keep it as is? It's Sat night and my dentist isn't available until Monday. I'm afraid to eat or sleep
- Are you a dentist? If not, don't attempt to replace the crown - especially with temporary teeth cement. The very fact that the underlying surface has now been exposed to germs means that putting cement or anything else on to the area opens the tooth and the surrounding gum to infection. You'll have to wait to see your dentist on Monday. I note that I lost a crown and had to wait several days because I was overseas and couldn't locate a dentist. What I did was to wash my mouth with an antiseptic mouth wash several times a day. I found a dentist as soon as I could who cleaned the area thoroughly. My own dentist replaced the tooth. I no longer chew chewing gum. The practice is a recipe for disaster for those of us with crowns on our teeth.
- Q: While cleaning out the garage of a home I recently bought, I found a sealed unlabeled tub with a cement (or concrete) mixture inside. Is there a way to tell if it is Portland, Quickrete, Sakrete, or whatever? Thanks.
- Portland cement is the base for all types of concrete and mortar mixes. Some have lime added for adhesion for brick and block work, others have latex additives for strength. There's no way to tell without the label.
- Q: WHY is chemical cement less abundant in SHALE? WHY is it variable in conglomerate?
- Chemical cement in shale is less abundant because shale particles are so small can normally bind the rock together without an additional bonding from a chemical cement. Chemical cement in sandstone (NOT part of your question), is much more abundant because the particle size - normally visible quartz grains - is such that the rock would disintegrate, as unconsolidated sand, if it were not present. Chemical cement in conglomerate is variable because conglomerate is variable. Is the conglomerate pebble supported or matrix supported? A pebble supported conglomerate may be bound together with a later chemical cement. A matrix supported conglomerate may be bound by the sand or clay rich matrix which will not require any later infilling cement.
- Q: Why don't they just cConcrete anywhere that they have to Cement?
- Cement is Portland Cement. One of only a few ingredients that comprise Concrete. The cracks as the CE said are contraction/control joints. As Concrete cures, hardens, the Concrete shrinks. The control joints are not the full depth of the Concrete, but rather only a few inches. These joints again as the CE said are for controlling the cracking of the Concrete. This along with the rebar that is embedded in the pad, keeps the Concrete cracking to a minimum, but lets the control joints do there job.
- Q: much does 1 cubic foot of portland cement weight in water?
- portland cement has a density of 1506 kg/m? 1 ft? = 0.0283 m? that is dry cement, not setup. You didn't specify if it is dry or setup. mass = 1506 kg/m? x 0.0283 m? = 42.6 kg The displaced water weighs: density of water at 20C = 0.998 g/cm? = 998 kg/m? 998 kg/m? x 0.0283 m? = 28.2 kg subtracting, we get 42.6–28.2 = 14.4 kg, or 31.7 lbs. .
- Q: How do you clean a burn mark from cement?
- formerly you unharness the muriatic acid bomb on your driveway, i might advise renting a 3000psi or better stress washer. device condo yards hire then for roughly 20 dollars a say, or much less for 0.5 an afternoon. Be carefull because of the fact in case you proceed to exist one spot too ling it is going to actual start up eating away the cement.
- Q: i was told not to use anything that would seal the cement, and that the object needs to breath.
- I believe you were misled, it won`t hurt a thing to seal the cement, so use any type of paint you want.
- Q: The different meaning of Cement Clinker and Clinker?
- Clinker is ground (usually with the addition of a little calcium sulfate) to become Portland cement. It may also to be interground with other active ingredients to produce: blastfurnace slag cement pozzolanic cement silica fume cement Clinker, if stored in dry conditions, can be kept for several months without appreciable loss of quality. Because of this, and because it can easily be handled by ordinary mineral handling equipment, clinker is traded internationally in large quantities. The freight cost is much lower than that for the equivalent amount of finished cement. Cement manufacturers purchasing clinker grind it as an addition to their own clinker at their cement plants. Manufacturers also ship clinker to grinding plants in areas where cement-making raw materials are not available. Happy Holidays !
- Q: I know they grab onto wood and trellis' but, do they need some kind of support to cover a cement wall?
- Those vines will grow if theirs any little cracks in the wall. But their very invasive plants, and will eventually cover, the wall completely. At least mine of a similar variety did. Even broke down the wall some over a few years.
