- Q: Technical question here. I know they can make marine cement by, essentially, bubbling CO2 through sufficiently basic ocean water and letting insoluble calcium and magnesium carbonates form. I don't know the details further than that, but it's something like that. One problem is that, in order to negate the acidifying effects of the CO2, they have to add a base.I know that at least some desert soils (maybe most of them) are fairly alkaline, and contain a lot of calcium and magnesium and such. So could you meaningfully take a bunch of desert soil, put it in water, then bubble CO2 through it to make marine cement? Or would there be a simpler (or at least less water-intensive) method to collect the calcium and magnesium carbonate from desert soils for use as cement? Or is there some other broad aspect or angle of the problem that I'm missing?
- Caliche is a hardened desert soil (rock) that is typically near the surface. I would think that you would end up digging a lot of desert to get much carbonates. There would be a large amount of heavy equipment use, lots of dust, and lots of lost habitat. Typically cement is produced by exposures of limestone that are ground down and converted to cement. I would think this would generally be a more economical and more environmentally friendly option. Since you apparently have a chemistry background, you may already know this, but cement is generally made by taking calcite or dolomite and heating it up to create lime / cement. This has been done since the Roman Empire. I have never heard of bubbling CO2 in calcium and magnesium carbonates. Are you suggesting that bubbling CO2 in ocean water will precipitate calcite? I think it would probably have the opposite effect and create more acidity which would tend to dissolve carbonates. Note: Ocean water is very basic. It is far from acidic and will almost certainly never become acidic. If you add a base to the desert soil, form a pile on the ocean floor, and bubble CO2 into it, you might precipitate some CO2 if the water is warm enough IMO. It would probably make more sense in most instances to simply use regular cement which is designed to form a very solid and strong structure. Carbonates will precipitate out of sea water in warm shallow water. Some of the beaches of the Bahamas are formed from precipitated carbonates called oolites.
- Q: I am putting tile on the wall in my bathroom (not in the shower), do i have to put cement board behind it?or can i just leave the drywall that is already there?
- Cement board is normally needed where directly in contact with moisture. I wouldn't change out your existing drywall.
- Q: I am pouring a concrete slab and Iknow the dimentions, how do i figure how much cement to order
- Cement is sold by the square yard. Calculate the number of square yards in the slab and order the cement.
- Q: I'm considering using hydraulic cement to stop my basement from leaking, We would like to finish it someday but want to make sure it won't leak later and cause more problems. Is it better to apply to the inside wall of the foundation or to dig around the house and apply to the outside? We don't have any obvious huge cracks that we've seen yet. Has anyone used hydraulic cement and have any tips/advice? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
- Use whatever you want, do whatever you want to with it. You have to fix the UNDERLYING problem first. Why is your basement leaking? Answer that question and we can help you more. Poor drainage scheme? Busted gutters and downspouts? Spring? Broken DWV line? Busted water supply line? Well? Find out the damn problem before trying to fix the symptom. You will be lots happier.
- Q: What is cement?
- In the most general sense of the word, cement is a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together.
- Q: my boyfriend wants the jordan black cement 3's from 2011 do u know the price of them and where i can buy them ? thank uuu :)
- Probably the most common occurrence and issue out there is having gum stuck on your shoes. There are time when it comes right off, then there are times when it's a desperate struggle to remove every single sticky bit of it off your shoes. The Air Jordan 3 has had a big year with some much loved, classic colorways returning to NikeStore, as well as a new edition especially for this year. Launching on Black Friday is the next installment the iconic Black/Cement Air Jordan 3 Retro. With big-time innovation and lethal good looks, the Air Jordan 3 was the first shoe designed by Tinker Hatfield and features visible Nike Air and elephant print alongside the introduction of the iconic Jumpman logo. The launch of this shoe was the first time Spike and Mike hooked up and Mars Blackmon started hitting TV screens around the world.
- Q: I have a 27 tv and bought a wall mount sufficient enough to support it except the wall is cement or concrete if there is a difference and there are no studs along the wall. Can I just use cement screws and what are they?
- Is the wall cement (solid) or cement block? If it's cement block, the blocks have hollow spaces so you have to drill them with a masonry bit and use toggle bolts. It the wall is solid cement, you can use any number of concrete anchors available at hardware and home improvement stores. BTW, the difference between cement and concrete is that concrete contains aggregate (like gravel) and concrete does not.
- Q: how is cement prepaed? what are the uses and different types of cement?
- I've been in exactly the same situation. We live on the edge of nowhere and can't get delivered concrete. We poured our greenhouse floor, using Portland premix cement and a mixer. Our mixer is slightly smaller than yours. We used extra water in the mix so it would stay workable longer. Bad idea! The floor did fine until the first winter. It then split, chipped cracked and, well, you get the picture. We ended up redoing it. The second time we divided the floor into three sections. Each section had its own small 3/8 rebar web placed 2 above ground in a 4 floor. We supported the web by driving 10 pieces of 3/8 rebar into the ground and wire to hold the web to them. Lastly, on the sides where the adjoining sections would go, we used 1 x 6 pieces of redwood. We drilled them and ran rebar through to the web – leaving 2' sticking out for attaching the new sections. That piece sticking out was attached to the next section's rebar web. It has been there for several years now, and has no cracks at all. Our temperatures range from 105°F in summer to -40°F in winter. I put a link in to show how to determine how many cubic yards of concrete you'll need. Good luck!
- Q: What is the use of using oxygen in cement industry?
- The ingrediants for the cement need to be heated to a very high temperature to make Portland cement. Usually methane with air is the heat source, but oxygen replacing some of the air is sometimes needed to reach the optimum temperature. Possibly a superior cement is produced if it has negligible nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide, so oxygen is used instead of air which contains nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide as well as oxygen.
- Q: It's already cured for about 36 hours. Is there something i can do? Someone mentioned something about Hydraulic cement. ????????
- There's no such thing as evening out cement once it's cured. It has to be removed and redone. Don't pay the contractor, and have him rip up the whole thing and start from scratch. His mistake... you shouldn't have to pay for it. NOTE: Take digital pictures in case you need to take legal action. A tip: place a newspaper from that day on the ground when taking a picture so that you can prove the date of the pictures.
