Q:I recently moved into a new flat and the carpets in the bedrooms are pretty dirty. There seems to be felt tip pen marks and smeared in makeup from the previous owners. The colour of the carpet is light grey.I'll buy new carpets in the future, but I just want them nice and clean seeing as I can't afford new ones at the moment. How can I clean them?: put water on it

Q:This rug has been in my room for at least ten years and it has never been cleaned. I don't have access to expensive supplies so I'll need to know how to do it myself with out steam `cleaners or anything else... I have heard of using oxyclean which I do have but I'd need instuctions. (this rug is VERY large... 10' by 13'). Thank youDanielle: For a rug this large, I suggest using either a foaming cleaner, like Woolite Spray Foam Carpet cleaner or a dry granule cleaner like Capture or Resolve. The both types of cleaners are a simple application. Just spray on the foam, agitate with a brush to work into the fibers, allow to dry and vacuum up. Dry granule, sprinkle on surface and work into the fiber with a brush and let dry, then vacuum. If you have spots or stains, just work either into it with a brush. I like the Woolite because it also contains a scotch guard that leaves a stain repellent and makes cleaning up spills easier without staining.

Q:Smup pump broke and water leaked on to the carpet: Have you tried calling your insurance company? It is really hard to get that out of a carpet and the bacteria that may be growing can be dangerous especially if you have allergies. If you do call them make sure to ask like it's a hypothetical question. You know, act like you've been shopping around a little more and you wanted to know if you have coverage for that situation and what it would cost to get that kind of coverage etc. If you have no insurance you might want to just get an estimate from a professional cleaning company. The ones that specialize in flood or fire damage clean up. If you are truly desperate and have very little to spend you could try some oxy-clean. Mix up a couple of gallons of it. Spray it over the carpet until you've saturated the whole area including the mat underneath and then leave it for about one hour. Then use a commercial cleaning machine(the kind you rent from a store) to suck up as much of the water as possible. Put a fan on the carpet and turn either your air conditioner or heat on because that will help dehumidify the area and make it dry up faster. After it's all nicely dried (aproximately 1 to 2 days). Sprinkle the carpeting with a powdered carpet odor remover and vaccuum it up after a few minutes. Oxy clean does kill mildew which is the culprit in most carpet smells. Oxy clean can remove some of the color from your carpet but not like bleach does! I haven't had it lighten anything of mine but that is the warning on the package! My daughter likes to play with water on her carpet in her bedroom (much to my dismay!) The oxyclean and carpet deodorizer work well at getting rid of that horrible smell.

Q:I want to replace my old carpet. It is very standard nothing special. It is 930 sq ft. How much will it cost me?: Empire carpet is just one who will come to your home and install the next day. Why drive around? USE Google or any online search in your area. Pay for the carpet, not the gas. If they are not in your area ask them for a lead for your area if they know one. If all else fails use the phone book. smaller areas don't use the internet.

Q:So does anyone know how to properly wash a rug. A living room sized rug.... 8x10... without damaging it or anything? My darling 2 y/o has spilt plenty of things on it and it's time for a washing!: I used to take my area rugs to my local chem-dry they'd clean them. I don't think there is a machine large enough to handle an 8x10 rug. Best of luck to you!

Q:I have a wine stain on my white carpet ....?what can I do?: Right away dump on some salt to prevent the wine from setting in. Try club soda, pour it on the entire moist area, the carbonated bubbles help to lift the stain... dab don't rub, with an absorbent cloth to sop up the rest of the red pigment... if you're like me and don't keep club soda around you can use white wine to counteract the red!
