Q: I just recieved a Harbor Freight generator with an 800/900 max watt capacity as a gift. I want to use it to power a 29 foot travel trailer (lights, microwave, tv, fridge, radio). I will be living in it so I want a way to give it power 24/7. I know this generater is not big enough to do that, but could I possibly charge 2-4 deep cell batteries to do the trick? I don't know much about this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.: Assuming this generator outputs 120 VAC, then get a battery charger rated at that voltage and 800 watts, and use that to charge the batteries. At 12 volts, that is about 60 amps, so it will charge a typical 12 volt battery quickly. Probably too quickly, be sure the charger can be set to the correct charge rate for the batteries you will be using, and has circuitry that will detect a full charge and taper the charge down to the proper value. But you will need a lot of expensive batteries. If your drain is more than 800 watts, say 2000 watts, and you want your batteries to last for, say, 10 hours, that is 20000 watt-hours. dividing by 12, that is (with losses) about 2000 amp-hours, which is a bank of 20 large batteries. But charging batteries in general does not help unless you are counting on charging them at night, say, when your drain is low and letting them supply the extra power during the day. This means you will need an inverter and a way to synchronize the inverter with the generator output. In practice that is not possible, so you will have to split your loads and rewire to accomodate that. Altogether, a mess. .

Q: I am just doing research on building my power system for a van. Now from what I understand the charge controller regulates but also hinders power going to the battery bank. My question is a 5000w 40amp gas generator would put out more power than a 12v battery bank would receive from one of the 80amp mppt controllers correct? And if this is correct is there any way to get around the flow problem to charge the batteries fast and maximize the generators output safely?: if something is producing a current of 40 amps with an energy rate of 5000watts it is creating a voltage of 125 volts. if something is producing a voltage of 12 v and 80 amps of current are flowing then 960 watts of power are involved. You have used the term 12v battery bank. This implies that there is a set of 12v batteries. Each battery is capable of being recharged independently if only the correct circuitry is provided. Each battery in such a system would be the limiting factor in the time taken to recharge the battery. If too much current is driven through a battery heat can accumulate and destroy the battery. There is insufficient information here to determine what can be done safely. The details of how the 12v batteries are built determines how rapidly they can be recharged.

Q: if a power factor (pf) correction has been done to the main panel of electrical system, will it correct the power factors of down stream equipments. can the pf improve by install separate capacitor banks along with the main panel.: Power factor improvement is not a precise science, we normally improve to 0.95 lagging to avoid slipping into pf1 or unity as parallel resonance will occur and the capacitor fuses will blow. Improvement at the main panel is the most practical method as you are dealing with the average of the pf of all of the loads on the system. The advantage of this is that the pf is unlikely to change rapidly and the pf relay can keep up with these changes easily. Break times and lunch are exceptions to this. pf improvement must be automatic as loads such as electric motors have varying pf's according to the load on the motor. So a band saw motor will have a fairly good pf when cutting, but a low pf when idling, similarly, a welding transformer will have a fairly good pf when welding is in progress, but a low pf when no arc is struck. pf Improvement at the load will reduce the current drawn by the load and may assist in reducing cable size, but do not over correct, fit a smaller than expected capacitor bank to allow for the better pf on load.

A POA is something that you sign when you are of sound mind and memory appointing someone with all the powers you yourself are able to do (banking, sell property, investing, etc.) In this instance you would have to apply to your Public Trustee's office to be appointed his comitte (sp?) which not unlike a POA with respect to the powers you have but it appointed by the Public Trustee not the person. If there are disputes and infighting amongst the family, more than likely the Public Trustee would appoint a Third Party (more than likely someone from their office). As to your additional details that is what I have described above and is not a POA but does give you similar powers. The doctor cannot reccomend you all he can do is say in his professional opinion your father is incapable of handling his own affairs.
