Q: I am changing an outside light with a inside wall switch there is 2 cables going to the outside box. ( 3 wires -white w/red line wire and black wire and green ground wire ) other cable 3 wires is white wire and black wire and green ground wire.On the inside switch is 3 wires white wire a black wire a green ground wire.for some reason it is not working, can any one tell me how to wire and or test for power. thank you
In a normal 120V system you will have Black(hot) White( neutral) Green or bare copper(ground). So the green wire are wired together with a pig tail to the ground on the switch (if grounded) the white wire, if neutral, should be wired together also and no connection to the switch. The black wire should be wired to the switch and the other black wire to the other side or pole of the switch. But I think you are wiring to an existing switch, meaning it controls another light already. In that case the three wires will be White(hot) Black(to the existing light) green or bare copper (ground). To find out check the switch wires white to ground If you get 120V on the white that means you do not have a neutral at the switch, or what is commonly called light wiring. With out a neutral the out side light will not work. So you have to pull wire to the switch to get a neutral. Good Luck.

Q: Okay, I just started tearing into my partially finished basement of the home I bought last week. Some of the electrical wiring is interesting to say the least.I have a junction box in the basement. One wire connects directly to the panel, another out to an outlet, and the third goes up and out to half the house. All of this is 14/2 except the quot;thirdthat runs up and out. This is wired with 14/3 but the third wire isn't connected to anything. Should I be concerned considering every outlet in the house works?
Are you saying the 14/3 is being used as 14/2? Sometimes that is done because if at some later time you need the third line you have it. Or the electrician had extra wire and just used 14/3. 14/3 can be used for switched receptacle. a
Q: hey im wiring up a headunit to my L300 van. The factory headunit wasnt there and im having trouble connecting which colour wires to the factory colour wires. if anyone knows which coulours go to what would be much appreciatedcheers.

Q: How do electric and other companies decide on strung wires in consideration of snowfall?
The spec on the wires includes enough strength to handle reasonable loads, such as snow and wind and ice. Actually snow is a very light load, compared to ice and wind. Usually they are a steel core with aluminum around it. The aluminum handles the current, the steel the mechanical loads.
Q: I have a ceiling fixture outlet which has 4 wires coming out (red, black, white and uninsulated ground). There is only one light switch that controls it. I wanted to attach a light fixture to connect to that, but the light fixture only has 3 wires (red, white and green - ground). How do I connect this light fixture to the 4 wires?
Canada and the USA Usually the Red wire in the cieling outlet is controlled by the switch. The Black wire in the cieling outlet should be live all the time. Cap the black wire off with the proper size wire nut. The white wire in the cieling outlet is the common wire. The bare wire in the cieling outlet is the ground wire. it should be attached directly to the metal ground screw in the outlet. The green wire on the light fixture must be connected to the ground screw in the cieling outlet. Connect the white wire on the light fixture to the white wire in the cieling outlet Connect the red wire on the light fixture to the red wire in the cieling outlet. If this does not work, whoever did the wiring did not follow convention. Interchange the red and black cieling outlet wires: Connect the red wire on the light fixture to the black wire in the cieling outlet. Cap off the red wire in the cieling outlet with the proper sized wire nut.
Q: can aluminum wiring catch on fire
You got lots of good answers but I like Lic. Electricians best. If you are in an older Mobile home where all the wiring is aluminum be very, very careful about over loading receptacles. Aluminium wire was outlawed for use in branch circuits (receptacles, lights) because there were many documented fires as a result of its use. If you are concerned about aluminum wire to the panel or major appliances, have someone check/tighten the connections.
Q: I have 1971 slide in truck camper with 5 way pin wiring wires are red, white ,yellow, black, green.need to know what wire's do what...thanks
green is common ground. red is usually rear lights, White and yellow are the turn signals Black is the bachk up lights. But it is not standard.
Q: the wires that are in most electric appliances
Hot, neutral, and ground. black wire is hot (right side of outlet) --this is the one that can shock you. white wire is neutral( left side of outlet) green wire is ground(bottom side of outlet) when wiring an outlet black goes to gold screw, white goes to silver screw, and green goes to the ground(bottom) screw. remember black-gold white -silver green to ground the world around
