Q: I have a white carpet that has gotten dirty over the years. The color has just generally changed to a dirtier white. It's kinda dark and you can easily tell which parts of the carpet haven't gotten dirty over the years as they are perfectly white. I also have some stains. I tried bleaching some parts of the carpet which did actually work, but that left clean spots that look weird compared to how the rest of the carpet is. I would bleach the whole thing but it created such a strong smell last time that I couldn't sleep in my room. Is there a way to generally whiten the entire carpet with the supers strong smell of bleach. Preferably a way to do this with household items. Thank you.: Sorry man you have ruined your carpet. As a few other folks have mentioned you ''should'' have contacted an IICRC certified carpet cleaner. Bleach never stops oxidizing until you neutralize it. You can contact a qualified hot water extraction carpet cleaner (IICRC is a Professional association that indicates they know what they are doing) to see if they might be able to make it livable. By the way its a cleaning wand not a magic wand, they will only be able to do so much.

The carpet in my childhood bedroom has silly putty stuck in it, marker stains, nailpolish stains, paint spills, you name it. Carpet tiles are good for young kids because you can REPLACE them. Accidents happen, kids are messy and getting someone to clean your carpet is expensive. This also gives you the option to change the flooring when your daughter gets older if she wants something different. Picking up carpet tiles is cheaper then hiring someone to take out old carpet and install new.

Think of carpet pad as the foundation for your carpet....the stronger the foundation, the more durable what's above it. The better the pad, the longer your carpet will last. You can put an inexpensive carpet on a good pad, and have the carpet last longer than an expensive carpet on a cheap pad. I usually recommend and 8 pound 7/16 pad, but if money is tight, don't go with anything less than a 6 pound 7/16.
