- Q: No insulation was installed under roof of my 2 story home. Im not rich but looking for info on installing about 450 ft. up there.
- Based on the geography you are put up insulation rates would differ, I would suggest initially you just call Insulation contractors who offer free home energy audits and ask them to give their estimate , based on the rates you choose one which suits your budget. Usually type of insulation you choose determines your rate, so do a little homework on it
- Q: I do not have extra space on the roof. Roof also tapers to drains at one end of building.
- the R values, i am not sure. that white stuff is NOT Styrofoam. it is a cheap imitation. Real Styrofoam is made by DuPont, is usually a light blue, with a plastic seal coat on both sides. that thin plastic seal coat doubles the R value. what really does the insulation, is trapped air. air is actually a poor conductor of heat. the foam is actually little bubbles of air. dead air that is, air that cannot circulate and move. it works similarly to the way a down vest or coat works, it fluffs up and holds the air pockets out within a confining structure, thus retaining heat. the rigid stuff will last much longer, i can tell you that much. the white foam stuff deteriorates quickly. buy cheap, get cheap, is the general rule. you may wind up only having to do it again in a few years.
- Q: ... building code max. (R-50)???
- "R" I think stands for "Resistance" factor against heat loss. It resists the heat transfer but doesn't stop it. There is no such thing as perfect insulation. Snow itself is a rather good insulator. So even though you are only losing very little heat, the snow on top of the snow directly on the roof helps trap that heat at the bottom. So the first layer will melt.
- Q: weather stripping/ foam strip?
- Those foam strips they sell you to go under the ridge caps will eventually dry out, blow out, and be hanging all over the place. Caulking won't fill a 5/8's gap to keep the wind/rain out, and tar has no place whatsoever on a metal roof, you'll get it all over everything, and either one will look like ****. The best ridge cap has to be custom made and cut to fit. I use a 12" wide X 10' strip, bent in half to pitch, and then turn down 90 degrees on the edges, whatever the rib height is, usually 5/8". Hold the ridge cap in place on the ridge and mark where the ribs are, then notch out for the ribs so that the cap sits flush over the ribs and down on the flats, punch holes and screw down thru the tops of the ribs. It's a little time consuming but it makes for a good looking finished product that won't wear out.
- Q: So I'm renovating an old farmhouse with a metal roof and there is no insulation in the attic. I was up in the attic checking for leaks since we just got some freezing rain and it is currently melting I thought now was the perfect time to check. I found no leaks but I did notice the roof was sweating with noticeable beads of water in many places and many of the 2x4's that act as the frame were damp, although none were rotted (I found that odd as the house is approx. 140 years old and those are the original 2x4's. I could tell that the attic does have vents so I guess it dries out before rotting or mold occurs.. but makes me wonder if I put down some roll-in faced R-30 Owens Corning Insulation and then add a plywood floor over top if everything will be fine.. or not so fine..
- If there is condensation on the underside of the roofing then you do not have sufficient ventilation of the attic. You can certainly insulate the ceiling but you do need to add soffit and roof vents to get some air circulation into the attic. You should do this regardless of adding insulation to the ceiling.
- Q: does insulation, with a high R value, in the attic prolong the life of the shingles on the roof.
- No. Ventilation prolongs the life of a roof. Ventilation also reduces the air conditioning bill by a huge amount. If you use a lot of AC, also add an automatic attic fan. As for insulation, the idea is to have a good R factor, relative to where you live, directly above the highest living space ceiling in the house
- Q: I have read in some articles about roofing that it is recommended to use attic roof insulation in ones roofing. Is this true?
- If it's an unfinished attic space, you'll want insulation on top of the ceiling, but not in the rafters which would prevent airflow from your soffit to the ridge vent or gable vent if you have that. You need it on top of your ceiling to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- Q: I added a screened room to my mobile home. I also have vinyl windows. in the summer the sun beats down on the home almost all day Someone told me I could have insulation installed in the roof panels, and that i may even be able to do it myself. - I agree with RustyNail that the panels are thin and not meant to support that kind of weight. But, I think a wall anchor that spreads the weight inside the foam would work if that's the only place to attach. I'm imagining that there's no wall available since these usually are just supported at the ends. If so, then my first suggestion would be no curtains at all. My second would be to find a long wall anchor. With 6" of foam, I would think you could do a 4" long anchor and get pretty good support. Rusty may disagree.
- Q: I am in the process of having a new roof installed. What are my options in regards to improving its' insulating properties?
- I am going to convert my loft, so was researching this subject as well. I once saw on TV (I think on Renovation program) how they make insulation from sredded paper - this was a very inexpensive and very efficient way of doing it. Also they said that the best insulation is the one made from sheeps' wool. You can buy this from major DIY stores. Have a look at the links below
