- Q: I have two solar panels that were going to be trashed at work. I want to use them to charge batteries on my RV but i noticed they put out around 20 volts in direct sunlight. So i am wondering: -isn't this way too much voltage for a 2 volt system? -do a need some sort of a regulator connected to keep them from overcharging?
- You can use them without the regulator . Just make sure you use blocking diodes so the the power does not flow back into the panels . You can get those at radio shack of some electronic store or off OKorder for a few bucks .

- Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
- You have to look at the power output of the cell. The first consideration has to do with voltage. A single cell with no load might output one volt or less. Wiring cells in series would double that output, at least in theory. (Internal resistance will lower the actual voltage.) You've wired the cells in parallel, however. Try unsoldering one electrode and then measure voltage output of each cell. There is still the issue of current output. I don't know if there will be enough with your setup. How many cells are there and what kind of batteries were they charging?

- There are two basic types of solar panels. ) Thermal absorbers 2) Photovoltaics Thermal absorbers are black in order to convert sunlight to thermal (heat) energy. The whole idea is to capture all of the light with a dark surface, convert it to thermal energy and transfer the energy into your home for water heating or space heating. If you make the surface white or reflective, then the surface will absorb only a small fraction of the available light, hence the efficiency will be very low. In other words, the panel will not produce any heat. Photovoltaic panels produce electricity instead of heat energy. Photovoltaic panels are made from thin slices (“waffers”) of silicon with special coatings on the front and back surface. One of these coatings on the front is an antireflection coating to capture the light and channel it toward the silicon. Underneath the antireflection coating the silicon waffer is coated with other chemicals that convert the sunlight to electricity. The combination of these coatings gives the panel a dark color, usually blue or black. Here's the bottom line. If you want thermal heat or electricity from solar panels, the panels have to capture the light. When that light is captured, the surface appears dark because no light (or very little) light is reflected back to our eyes. It is not possible for a surface to be an efficient absorber, capturing all available light, and at the same time appear white or bright color or reflective to our eyes.

- While you can measure voltage on a like without a load, the measure of amperage is more closely related to the amount of power that is being drawn. The amperage is measured with the meter in series (not parallel like voltage) with the load. What it ends up measuring is the load that is being drawn from the solar panel and not the potential of the panel.

- There's no way that home built system that will generate enough power to run your home off the grid. That's all hogwash! No wind = no electricity generated. No sun = no electricity generated. They are expensive ($20k - $50k) before tax credits, but they have been designed by engineers, not back yard, shade tree wanna-be engineers. They will put power into the grid during the day (making your meter run backwards) and you'll draw the power back at night (when there's no sun). This is perfectly legal. It must be installed by power company approved techs. That's how power companies are going to meet their green energy mandates for the future. You'll generate power for the power company and get paid wholesale prices for it (during the day). But you'll buy it back at retail (at night)
