- Q: The Physics club in our school is trying to convince the Board of Ed to install solar panels in our school, and i was just wondering if anyone with some experience or real expertise in solar energy. I need some points about their usefulness some real pros and cons on maintenance, etc. Anything will help. Personally i would be perfectly for the idea, but i heard that the overall cost of installing them is much higher than the cost of the energy saved and government subsidies, but ive only heard about this.

- Are you thinking of installing electric solar panels or thermal solar panels or both? It would be better to install electric solar panels for electric heating. You can run 7 heaters as long as you do the calculations for the number of panels need for the daylight hours, and the required battery bank to supply the required power.

- having solar panels move like that on a mobile platform is inadvisable -- especially if there is a dynamic wind load resulting from the motion of the mobile platform. Even having a tilt mechanism is dubious at best. think of what limited marginal gain would be gained by mounting a small solar panel on the moon roof of a car. (ultimately, the best answer is to turn the car so that it's angle to the sun is optimal -- but the road/travel direction constraints are what ultimately prohibit that.) while there are ways to build sliding panels, the weight constraints would interfere with your weight/thrust ratios to the point of futility. if you really need that panel somewhere else, don't slide it out of the way, just buy another panel and mount it there. it's more expensive, but it's actually the cheapest solution in terms of design on a mobile platform.

- This question is too generalized to answer. Are you australia? If so ergon buys the power back at 45cents a KWH which is 3 times what they sell it for.(this is guaranteed for 20years) We have a 2.4kw system and it will take approx 5years to pay itself off. Once carbon trading is in full swing electricity costs are going to go up by 40%, then obviously it will take approx half the time.

Since green energy is the 'hottest' growing business area recently with usage growing about 30% per annum and investors putting all their money into solar energy, wind farms, biofuel, etc. I think when you sell solar systems online this will be the most appealing business model to the end customer...especially if you offer free installation on orders of say $000.
- Presently the technology is not there using green energy. Green energy is popular, but not as effecient as they claim. There is no product today whether it is electric cars, windmills, solar panels that have a lucrative payback. They all have their drawbacks. Your thinking is good, but the market and the techology just isn't there yet. If it were, you would see solar panels on every house. You already have the competition as you noted, and they aren't prospering... Good luck.

- In order: .? Just about any wire will do.? You can handle 50 mA over just about anything, even 28 gauge telephone wire.? Your biggest problems are probably going to be mechanical stress (you want stranded wire instead of solid, to avoid breakage) and dealing with the size of larger wires. 8 gauge speaker wire may be a good optimum. 2.? You need a diode.? If you're charging NiMH or NiCd cells you're going to have about .25 volts/cell; you can charge up to 3 of them in series with a 4.8 volt panel.? The solar panel is a bunch of diodes itself, but they're leaky in the reverse direction; the diode prevents the batteries from discharging themselves back through the panel.? You want a Schottky-barrier diode, because the forward voltage drop is about 0.2 volts instead of 0.7 volts for a regular silicon rectifier.? This gives you maximum current output from your panel.
