Q:There are some chairs at office depot that has this feature. I plan on buying one for moderate home usage. They state that you should lower the tension for lighter people and raise the tension for heavier people. But exactly how does the feature help prolong th elife of the chair. I am actually neither heavy or light in weight. And i want to prolong the life as long as possible.: Tilt Tension

Q:Imagine a typical chair, with legs perpendicular to the seat. It must support 135kg. The two front legs act as two supports. Instead of the back two legs, there is one support. This one support must be between the middle of the chair and where the two back legs would be. What calculations could I carry out to work out the load on each support for when the back leg is in different positions? Thanks!: Can we look at the cautions and exceptions to this model? First of all the back legs in a normal chair are not at the back of the seat but extend out further so they are under the top of the back of the chair or further. In addition, the center of mass of someone sitting in a chair is not in the center of the chair but is close to the bottom of the tilted back where the hip bones support the upper half or more of the body weight. Having said that, change the specifications so the 135kg is centered on the chair seat and the single support is moved in various locations from that center away from the front legs (and the chair itself has no weight) The distance from the front legs to the middle is D and the seat is 2D deep. The distance from the middle to the rear support is X and varies from 0 to D. When X is 0, then entire weight is on the rear support. When X is D, then half the weight is on the front legs and half on the support. Therefore the amount of weight in any position is F = 135 * (D / (D + X)) When X =0, D/D+0 = 1 When X =D, D/D+D = 1/2

Q:I am installing a chair rail in a room with a window. When my chair rail meets the window, should I run it right below the window trim? Or should I give it some room between the rail and the trim of the window. I am painting one color below the rail and another color above the rail.Thanks for your help!: Actually chair rail placement shouldn't strictly depend on window placement at all. To follow that line of thought; what might it look like if the window sill was as low as 12 inches off the floor level? OR above 48 inches. Certainly there are no chair rail laws or police to enforce a choice; and you should place it where it pleases you aesthetically. Without knowing at all whether or not the window is framed; or recessed into the wall as part of the drywall. I would NOT then frame the unframed window in chair rail. If the sill is at a height that suits the height of the rail, and does extend into the room; just BUTT the rail to the underside of the sill. Hopefully the window trim; if it exists; will be the same color as the chair rail. Without the details of the window this is all just guessing. Some homes have cultured marble sills; Especially those windows not framed with any decorative molding. The painting notion you suggest isn't unique. Steven Wolf

You're going to be making a lot of noise (assumably for a long time!) and the vibrations tend to move things about, even things as big as amps on chairs. It'd just be better to lay it down on the floor. If you really want it risen above the ground, try using something more stable, like a table or stool.
