- I'd go buy two things......plastic sheeting, and then some durable, but soft fabric from a fabric shop. Attach these two to the underside of the carpet....voila`....I'd say that should work. The plastic sheeting will help keep the under-fabric from wearing out too quickly and if any liquids were to spill on it the liquid would be confided to that rug and not the floor underneath. The fabric is obviously to protect the floor.

- humm, well you don't say how old the carpet is or if it can be matched.. I would look for carpet just like it and cut an even ring around the hole, then cut the new carpet to fit it as tight as I could.. You can seal it down with a carpet glue or double sided tape so it sticks to the floor and the carpet.. But, because I am a lazy human being.. I would just go and get a nice rug and lay it just under the chair.. They sell chair coasters for under the legs at walmart..

- I have Stainmaster ... and I have 3 dogs and a cat. My carpet is not yet 4 years old, and it is destroyed. Stainmaster isn't worth the time it takes to type the word. OK, the truth is ... if a stain is just on the surface, and you catch it and clean it RIGHT AWAY ... yes, you can usually get it out. However, if it soaks through, forget it. You may be able to get most of the visible stain out, but the smell? No way. If you could replace your carpet with Pergo, tile, anything BUT carpet, I'd recommend it. If, however, you do want to use carpet, I'd look into commercial-grade carpet. That's the stuff used in department stores, restaurants, offices, etc. Not too luxurious, but pretty tough. It is a very tight carpet ... most wet stains and spills will wipe up. And it can be vigorously scrubbed without damaging it. If you buy a carpet with an allover pattern, in a medium-to-dark tone, it will better hide the stains than one that is a solid color, especially a light color.
