Q: Details: The house is a 3 story house. When showering on the 2nd or 3rd floor, the living room ceiling leaked. Not just 1-2 drops but we had to get a bucket and you can see the staining on the ceiling. This was 4-5 years ago and we stopped using these showers. No further leaking when NOT using the showers. The contractor opened the ceiling today near the staining and turned on the showers. He said that there was no leaking. What happened? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Did the plumber stand in the shower and move around, jump up and down and attempt to distort the floor of the shower? Did he deflect the shower as would occur with someone actually standing in the shower, such that water would splash against the walls, back at the faucets, etc? Did he turn on both the hot and cold water? I would actually have someone use the shower, in particular whomever used the shower before when it leaked - the reason being that maybe something they were doing caused water to be diverted enough that it found a place to escape the shower stall and/or floor pan.
Q: Today, i found my cat sleeping on insulation from the ceiling in our garage. We think this may be why he has been losing his fur on his tummy, armpits, and knees, the skin is pink. Could him sleeping on the insulation be the cause for his fur loss? He also has been constantly licking and cleaning himself. When he cleans himself, he also grabs onto his skin, and pulls it, i guess scratching it because it's itchy.
I think the cat must be cold. Your name is Brooklyn so I'm assuming youre cat lives in new York and the weather must be getting cold there. God bless your kitty and the rest of the family. Everyone who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. To you and your household.
Q: This is an old house and has wood and some type of dry cement-type material in between the wood slats. I stepped on the ceiling while doing an insulation job in the attic. The wood is fine but the dryed material cracked and separated from the wood slats in the bathroom. The damages area is around 18 inches by 12 inches, and some cracks in other areas of the ceiling. I do not want to sheetrock the whole bathroom if i can avaoid it (too many projects in this ol house). thanks!
If all you are seeing from the bathroom are cracks: Cut a peice of 3/4 plywood a little larger than the area of cracked ceiling. From the attic side apply a good construction adhesive to the area between the loose ceiling and the wood slats. Don't skimp! Now cover the damaged ceiling from the bathroom side with the plywood and either wedge in place with a 2x4 (called a deadman) or attach the plywood with 2 (or longer) drywall screws, preferable into the ceiling joists. Once adhesive has dried, remove plywood, cover all cracks with self-adhesive fiberglass joint tape, and cover with this coat of quick setting joint compound. Durabond 300 works great for nonprofessionals because it has a long working time but will still dry very hard and will adhere to the existing plaster better than regular drywall joint compound. When dry, cover entire repair with skim coat of regular joint compound. When that dries, sand and paint. Ceiling should last until the next wrong step. If large pieces of ceiling have fallen: First replace larger areas with correct thickness drywall, then procede as descibed above. The washered screws described in other answers tend to create more cracks than they correct.
Q: has any one used corrugated metal (used comonly on barn roofs and in resturant decor). for a ceiling in a basement. ( will be in bar-living-game open area) want to have access and hate drop ceilings. planning on just screwing to joist. would like to know if you are happy with and if you have any pictures.
Plan B, if you don't go with the metal, we used styrofoam sheets on our basement ceiling and screwed on wooden molding between them so they could slide out easy for access. It was really cheap, it looks like a textured ceiling, you could never tell it was styrofoam unless you touched it. It was also easy to put up, very light and very easy to cut with a razor knife.
Q: How is Sophia Wardrobe?
With the improvement of living standards, people on the requirements of modern home more tended to taste, personalized. Europe and the United States has long been popular into the wall closet in recent years strides into the Chinese market, because of its own advantages, gradually recognized by the majority of urban residents. Sophia introduced the French design concept, and successfully moved the closet to the custom wardrobe, is the forerunner of the standard custom furniture.
Q: My A\C and Heater have problems keeping up in Hot\cold weather. Its summer now (I live in the Stl area) and when its 90+ sunny my house will not get colder than 80 degrees A\C going non stop. The A\C is putting out anywhere from 59-62 degrees and from what I can tell is sized properly. In my ceiling is blown in insulation at about 4-5" sitting just above the 2x4s some places more some less. The vaulted ceiling being a little more at around 6" Is this enough? Is my problem the Heating\Cooling unit or is there not enough insulation?
The minimum ceiling insulation should be R-30, with R-40 being the norm in the northern part of the U.S. The depth of insulation required to produce a R-30 depends on the type of insulation. Blown-in fiberglass will have about R-2.25 per inch, blown-in cellulose has about R-3.5 per inch and fiberglass batt has about R-3 per inch. In case you're not sure what type you have, fiberglass insulation looks like cotton candy, while cellulose looks likes ground-up newspaper. Batts are the best to install as there will be less airborne particles to breath, get in your eyes, etc. You just cut them to size and lay them across the ceiling joist so they seal any gaps caused by the ceiling joist, fans, light fixtures, etc.

Q: Hello, our house has a big crack in the ceiling running from on wall to the other ( only about 3 feet cause its a entrance way) and I was wondering if there is anyway to fix it properly? We will be selling the home in a year and don't want it to scare anyone off BUT also don't want to just paint over it ( may get sued for concealing a problem). Any ideas or thoughts? Are we screwed and may have to leave it and the house won't sell as fast?:(
First clean the crack out as deep as you can ,and about one half inch or more if needed deep. Then fill with dry wall compound level with old plaster. Let this dry a day.
Q: Can you play a sound absorbing effect with a grid ceiling?
Upstairs that is to use fiberglass, this is if it is home improvement, do not choose this, home improvement on the election polyester fiber cotton, the sound-absorbing effect is also good, according to the upstairs that do, polyester fiber sound-absorbing cotton filled 10 cm about there!
