- Rug burn is chafing , so neosporinr is perfect. Just wash with soapy water and let it dry first. It will clear up fast if it's just red. If its bleeding or oprn will take longer. Aloe, from a plant will work too.

- Nothing wrong with that. I have a large area rug over my carpet. I do roll it up every once in awhile to vacuum under it. Find a pattern rug which won't show stains. Use the colors in the sofa, carpet, and accent color. That'll be a safe bet. If you have a coffee table in front of the sofa the area rug won't show all that much. And if you didn't like it, roll it up before company arrives. At least the carpet will be clean. When my kids were small, I told them I was going to pull up the carpet and live with concrete floors. Just hose the floor when needed. Of course, they didn't care.

You should get it done at least once a year professionally anyway.... pro cleaning / steam cleaning / any kind of DEEP cleaning allows allergens etc. to get out of your carpet - so its a good idea to get it done at least once a year! :)
