- There will be two wires in the unit. The low voltage wires (white and red) attach one to each of the wires in the control box on the unit. There will be a wiring diagram on the inside of the ac unit access panel. Shut the power off first. Also, after you hook them back up, it may still not work. - Four wire power cables used to be used for 2 and 3 phase power. You would normally provide floodlight power with the use of 3 wires. How long is the cable length from house to floodlights? I would look to see what your source wire colors are and try to match those. It used to be in the USA that the red wire was used to carry the 120/240 Volts AC (50 ~ 60~ Herz). The Black wire was considered the return or negative line; and if you have a green wire it is used to put an earth ground on all the shielding, metal jackets, etc.

- In a nutshell: a) Verify that your service drop has the capacity for the additional load - verify this with your utility. b) If you are planning to install a 200A service in the barn, and you are planning to bury the wire, you will need to use 3-0 wire in a conduit. Use separate conductors. Check with your local electrical inspector, but I do not believe you will need to run a separate ground within the conduit for this application. The code may have changed, however. c) You will need to install a 200A fused safety-switch at the pole, and a new 200A panel in the barn. d) The barn panel will also have a 200A main disconnect breaker in it. e) You will need to install an additional ground-rod (or rods) at the barn panel. 1. DO NOT use old/used wire. 2. Consider running triplex wire overhead as it will be less expensive and equally effective. 3. Get the work inspected by an underwriter - your fire insurance will be voided if you do not. Lastly, it is not rocket science, but the codes and standards that apply are there for a reason - follow them carefully and fully and you will be fine.

- Q: Trying to wire up a toogle swithch for boat light. Have a positive and negiative wire coming from the battery. I have 2 wires coming out of the toggle switch and two wires coming from the light. What goes where? Thanks
- Like so: Battery (+) to inline fuse holder (within 6 inches of the battery). Fuse holder to switch. Switch to light. Light to battery (-). If you don't know what amp fuse you need, 3 amps should be more than enough in most cases. Please, please, please don't leave out the fuse -- boat wiring is subjected to a lot more shock, vibration than household or automotive. If the insulation gets chafed off the wires (more common than you might think) you can get a direct short to ground, which *will* get hot enough to start a fire. You really don't want to be dealing with a fire on your boat. Sounds like your switch is faulty. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ just read kilo's answer -- that's an interesting way to use a DPST switch. It'll certainly work, but seems a bit redundant to me. I just thought they were handy for switching two devices with separate 12V feeds (I used one for my helm lighting, with the tach being powered from the keyswitch accessory post, so it only lights up when the key's on). but he makes a good point; if your switch has 4 contact points (instead of just 2), make sure you use 2 on one side or the other (rather than the top 2 or bottom 2).
- Q: i have an amp (sony xm 2002gtr) that says it requires 4 gauge wire..but they cost $100+ and i have plenty of 8 gauge wires. can i use two 8 gauge wires as a substitute for one 4 gauge wire?and also, i have my capacitor grounded to unpainted metal of my car AND the ground port of my amp..is that incorrect?
- Two 8-gauge wires combined are equal to a 5-gauge wire, but that should be close enough for that amp. Make sure each wire has its own fuse near the battery; 40-amp fuses would be a good choice. If you capacitor is connected to ground, and your amp is grounded, then you don't really need a wire between the capacitor's ground terminal and the amp's ground terminal. It doesn't hurt anything, though. If the only ground wire at the amp is the one that runs to the capacitor, then you're better off connecting the amp ground directly to chassis metal.
