- Q: I want to make wire art but I'm not sure what type of wire to use
- They also sell rolls of other wire, click on metals in the top sequence, choose one then choose wire.
- Q: OK - I removed my old light switch and can see that there are only 2 wires coming out of the wall to be found - 1 white and 1 black. There are absolutely no other wires that I can see back there. The dimmer switch has 2 black wires and 1 green. I'm really not sure what to do. I tried to connect the 2 black ones to the black one and the green wire to the white wire. I admit this wasn't the smartest thing, but thought I'd try. Got nothing. Any help is super appreciated.
- For one thing, first things first, TURN YOUR POWER OFF if you haven't already. All you have to do is connect the black to the black and the white to white. The green is a ground wire which allows a certain amount of protection (when installed and properly connected to a grounded metal surface/point). In many older buildings, this third wire does not exist in the wall. Without seeing your issue, I couldn't speak directly, but I wouldn't worry about the green. Cut it off or let it hang. When connecting the black and white though: PLEASE make sure you are twisting the bare wires together, screwing on a wire -nut TIGHT and then wrapping the nut and related 2 wires (black and black or white and white) in black electrical tape. If you're not familiar with or don't have the wires, wirenut connectors and tape, take the time to go get them. You REALLY need the right tools for this job. Don't take chances with electricity as a little lightning bug used to say. When you go to get the wirenuts at Home Depot or Lowes, ask the guy in Electric Dept to show you how it works. If you're still unsure, go ahead and call an electrician. It won't be that expensive and it's not something you want to get wrong.
- Q: I spliced the stereo wires to the adapter to plug into my car. there's 2 extra orange wires in the adapter. There orange it says there for illumination and the dimmer. What should I do with them? Did I get the wrong one?
- You should have bought a radio adapter for your car! Splicing the cables is not a good idea! You can get a Radio adapter which joins the connector from the radio to the cars radio wiring!
- Q: So, I purchased a motion sensor light switch to replace the regular switches at my new condo. I have the wires exposed and I've identified the hot wire. My only problem is the hot wire (from inside the wall) is a single thick copper prong, whereas the wire for the motion sensor is split into like 15 different small copper wires.... I don't think the thick, single wire from the wall will work with the twisting wire connectors I purchased.... Am I able to just put the wires together and duct tape them??
- You need wire nuts, conical plastic pieces with wire helical cones inside them... which sounds like what you have already. (It is not allowed to crimp solid wire - it weakens the wire.) Wire nuts come in different sizes; you will want the orange ones. To use the wire nut, lay the stranded wire alongside the solid wire, both stripped back about 3/8 inch, give the pair a gentle twist with your fingertips, and twist the wire nut on them until it stops or gets pretty hard to twist. Give a test pull on each wire.
- Q: While updating the parents basement we needed to replace a very very old 3 way switch. However, the wiring to the Fluorescents seems extreme to me. Here is how i can describle the layout. Panel - junction box - double splice (one to light fixture and one to threeway switch below it)-. From that threeway switch 12-3 wiring to upstairs landing with other threeway switch resides. How should I make my connections to switches? If the other swtiches were not so old I would just copy them.
- Hi its looks as if you bought the wrong switch,if it fits try connecting the black to black, and white to white, tape off the red it should work,if not black to black and red to white, you cant blow anything but it may run without switching on,just be careful and turn of fan fuse switch at mains All the best John UK I now see your extra Information ,your fan will not work unless you connect the supply to your fan is connected, you need a permanent supply [live] and a switched supply [live] and a neutral all three cables go into timer and out of timer two connections to the black and white cables.the timer SWITCH should be marked L--N--S L =live incoming N =neutral S =switched live,---S=White N=black I hope that's this is enough Information John UK
- Q: The infamous headlight switch please help
- What is so infamous about plugging the wiring to the switch? It will only plug in one way. UPDATE 8/6/11: In over 45 years, I've only replaced one headlight switch that had melted and that was on a 1994 Plymouth Acclaim and the driver had left the headlights on all night and yes it drained the battery. The plastic plug had melted but the wires had not burned through, so I had something to work with. There is a possibility you can find a wiring diagram on Auto Zones website for your car, they do have an extensive library or you could try to find a Haynes manual for your car. Or if you are low on $$ if you tell us what manufacturer, model, year of car you drive someone here might be able to help.
- Q: Does anyone know what color the neutral safety wire is on a 1995 suburban? The one in the ignition harness.
- The yellow wire on the ignition switch harness goes to the transmission range switch (aka park/neutral safety switch) on the transmission, and then the purple wire on the transmission range switch goes to the starter solenoid.
- Q: I have 4 gauge wiring ground and power cables, as well as a smaller guage wiring that is colored grey. I have the amp hooked up to the gound and power, how do I connect the sub to the amp?The subs is a 08 L7 in the kicker truck box wired to 2 ohms. The amp is the Alpine PDX 1.600.
- take (i use 12 gauge wire on my sub installs) 16-14 gauge wire and hook up the positive on the amp to the red terminal on the sub and negative to the black one. I'm not really sure what you need exactly
- Q: How do I find the remote wire on the back of my stock Ford Focus strereo? I have a line output converter to connect the rca cables to the deck, but I cannot tell wich wire is the remote wire. How can I track this wire down to connect it to the amp?
- blue wire or blue with a white stripe antenna wire, the wire that tells the antenna to go up and down or just use any wire that is only hot when the radio is on (use a test light), the power wire to the radio (not constant or memory) ignition
- Q: I got a ventilation fan for the bathroom. The fan has 2 wires and there are 2 wires sticking out of the wall. How do I know which wire connects to which wire? What would happen if I connect the wrong wires?
- The fan will run no matter which way the wires are connected. The AC that is going to run the fan has no specific polarity like DC does. The only question would be safety. See if there's a green screw anywhere on a metal part of the fan. If there is, you should run a ground wire to it. There might not be, and in that case, because the fan only has 2 wires, it must be double insulated and will pose no shock hazard. You've probably seen electric drills with no ground wire. These are double insulated and are safe to use without a ground wire.
