- Q: We are about to install 450 sq ft of 18x18 inch travertine tile on an indoor concrete floor and I need as much information about the installation process as possible. I have done a number of ceramic tile jobs, but never laid travertine. Some of the questions I have are:1. is it best to use spacers and grout, or butt the tiles?2. if I use spacers, what size should I use?3. should I apply a coat of sealer to the tiles before laying them?4. what size notched trowel should I use and at what angle?5. how many coats of sealer, brand and type of finish is recommended?6. I read somewhere that it is not recommended laying travertine straight, but in a Versailles pattern. Any one have any idea what this is?Does anyone have any more advice on laying this type of tile. - Installing travertine is not an easy task but it is definitely worth all the effort. It is perfect for floor tiles and travertine pool coping is perfect as well! The thing that you have to do is to speak with a professional about it.

- Sorry, some of that wasn't really about tiling, but still: Home Depot is a great place to get tiling from. It has some extremely cheap prices! I definitely would recommend them as far as pricing. Hope this all helps!

- Is it a pure white? If so your best look will be a white grout. If you have any coloring or haze of color in the tile pick up and match that as best as possible. The use of any other colors in a pure white tile will show as a checker board look on the floor. Maybe not so bad in a real light tone, but any time you go a grey tone it will jump out at you. You asked about type of grout, most likely you ll need a sanded grout and have to use a 1/8 th 3/16 th or a 1/4 inch grout joint.I prefer 3/16th myself and thats what I use on most all my jobs. There are a few (few) porcelains made to go tight together and you ll need a unsanded grout. These you can tell by the tiny beveled edge they ll have .. - If you need to prep such as lay cement board or do you have slab to go directly over? Proper prep work is the most important thing. To lay tile , center the room, lay tile out dry. When you get to the wall, if you have a 1/2 tile or bigger, your all set. If you end up with less than 1/2 tile, recenter the middle tile to shift every thing over by a 1/2 tile. Then strike a line. Mix thin set, let it set and mix again. You ll want it to be spreadable but not to thick. The use of the proper size trowel for what ever size tile. Don t spread any more thin set than you can set tile in just a few minutes. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. - Q: For some reason I‘m having a hard time finding a good DIY instruction page on how to remove floor tile. Half of them are about removing just one damaged tile and the rest all have different methods. Some say to place a towel on top of it and smash with something, others have different machines. I‘m not really sure where to start. The space is about 5‘ x 5‘ and the tiles are the tiny kind, like 1 sq. inch each. What tools do I need? Do people usually tile underneath wooden vanities? Will I have to take it up? Help!
- I am assuming the tile is on a wooden sub-floor based on the under the vanity question. If so take a hammer to it. The tiles should come up fairly easily. the hard part is getting the thin set cement underneath to come up. Try a scrapper with a 4 razor blade to get that up. try wetting it first. If it turns out to take too long and you find it difficult to get the thin set up, consider renting a roto-chipping hammer to get it up. It's about $35 a day to rent. If this is an older home, the tile will be in a cement base up to 1 1/2 thick (with a wire mesh) and you'll want to get the rotohammer then. If the tile is on a concrete slab intead of wooden sub-floor get the rotohammer. Hope this helps

- Measure Length and width then multiply the two measurements. This will give you the square footage for how many tiles you will need. When you go to buy- the carton will tell you how many square feet comes within the box. You should always start tiles at the center. This way if there are any tiles that need trimming, they will be at the edges of the wall and not in direct sight.

- I would use ceramic tile. It comes in a variety of sizes and colors and is relatively easy to put up. It is also very easy to clean. If you haven't tiled a lot before, get self spacing tiles. Then you do not need to mess around with tile spacers. This will speed up your job. Also, if you have never tiled before, check with your local hardware store. Some places like Home Depot and Lowe's will offer free tiling classes. HTH!
- Q: I‘m trying to tile a map using swing (JPanel and JFrame) but don‘t know where to start. Ideally the map would end up looking like pokemon or 2D zelda games, where there is an invisible, underlying grid, and the person occupies one spot at a time. - That's the most efficient way to do it. You use math to calculate positions, so the tiles are virtual. Unless you really need to draw tiles with boundaries, don't show them (like the original Warcraft game). Perform all of your calculations like movement and clicks-to-tile conversions based on pixel location. This is far more efficient that trying to do it with lots of actual Java subpanels merged together. But, note that it's a lot of work and you have to carefully work out your calculations to make sure your clicks are aligned correctly. One mistake I made with a hex map once was I used doubles and I casted them to integers too early, and the slight different (by losing percentage) threw all my calculations off slightly. The trick is to create your background image tiles so that they blend seamlessly together on all sides. That will take a LOT of effort.
