Q:The previous owner of my house did not correctly install tile in my bathroom. There is a thick grout line along the bathtub, and when I apply a good amount of pressure on a tile (full bodyweight), I can hear the grout grinding against the tub. I know the right thing to do is replace the tile but I have plenty of other home projects to do before we sell the house. Would it be acceptable to saw out the grout along the tub, refill it with new grout, then caulk? Would this at least fix the grinding noise I hear?: Just get some flexible caulk and cut your tip thin. Apply it and then cram it down it the area between tub and tile then apply bead of caulking and let dry for 24 hours.

Q:my boss wants to remove floor tiles and stain the cement floor underneath the tile, what is a easy way to remove the old tile: There is no easy way, just some ways that aren't quite as difficult as others. Get a floor scraper from HD or Lowe's. Also get a stiff putty knife and a torch. Use the knife and torch to start an area, then pop the rest of the tiles off with the floor scraper. Next, you will need to remove the adhesive. Use the torch to soften the glue, then scrape it off with the putty knife. Once you get the majority off, you can use adhesive remover, which is available at most tile stores, to get the rest off. If you can, use a sander on the floor to remove any traces of the adhesive before staining. Hope this helps.

Q:Please help me decide the right color to use. We are renovating our bathroom and I always wanted a navy blue or maroon toilet bowl. Today, I see a perfect navy blue/dark blue toilet bowl but I do not know what is the best color of tiles or walls should I use. We do not like white tiles or walls since it is really hard to maintain. My husband wanted a floor to ceiling wall tiles. Please advise.: I also like floor to ceiling tile but usually not the whole room, but definitely in the whole tub/shower area. I think the rest of the room should be painted. As for color choices with a navy blue toilet... Thinking into the future and a possible sale of your home someday, I would go with a neutral color tile, possibly using the same tile (floor to ceiling) in the tub/shower area and on the floor of the bathroom. This really makes the whole room appear larger. If you go with the navy toilet bowl, gray and beige shades of tile would both go well and keep the hard-to-change things in the room, neutral. A new owner could easily change out a toilet if they did not appreciate the look of navy as you do but replacing the tile is a big issue. Stay neutral. So, navy bowl, beige or gray tile, sink-?, countertop-neutral complimentary to the tile, walls-shade of gray or beige. You can then add a pop or two of another color to liven up the room if desired. Like red navy towels or throw rug. Or gray print shower curtain. Or a colorful piece of art on the wall.

Q:Would they be easy to remove and not damage the floor (ugly linoleum) when I have to move out at the end of the year?: Damage? No. But how are you going to get them and the adhesive off when you go?

Q:How to calculate the area of the toilet and kitchen tiles: Such as the kitchen is 3 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. The area of the wall should be the circumference of the kitchen by height (2.5 + 2.5 + 3 + 3) * 3. = 33 and then remove the door and the window area is about 31 or so. Mainly look at your window size. The door area is basically a multi-square. Finally, the wall about 22 square feet up and down. The floor area is 7.5 square feet. Then use the wall area in addition to the area of the brick you choose. Such as: brick is 300 * 450 = 0.135. The ground is also true. The bathroom is so calculated.

Q:The existing ceramic tiles on the floor run up to the cabinets and appliances. Should I lay the floor first and then the cabinets or the cabinets first?: You have to do the ceramic tiles first, put down the tiles were the refridgerator and stove are going to be and then build up everything were the cabinets and dishwasher will be. You have to do it this way or when it is time to replace the dishwasher or you have a leak you will not be able to get the dishwasher out with out removing the counters. Then put in your cabinets.

Q:I am getting ready to replace my kitchen flooring. It currently has sticky vinyl tiles, which I hate. I want a nice tile look for sure. However, it seems it is very hard work installing real tile, and more expensive. I have seen some laminate click together tile flooring that looks pretty good.Which one is best? Which one would last the longest? Any other insight? Thanks!: Laminate is still basically wood under the top layer, if water does get to it it will swell. I personally have hardwood in my kitchen, which will do the same thing if it gets wet. Ceramic is stone much more stronger only issue is if you drop a pan could chip or crack the tile. Ceramic will last the longest, also if you do crack or chip a tile its an easy fix. Cut the grout joint pop the tile a place another. Laminate is much harder to repair. I have been installing floors for over 20yrs now, I have many pics on my work facebook page if you would like to look RJR Flooring. I was certified years ago to install pergo when it first came out. It came from Sweden. It was produced so they wouldnt have to pay taxes on home improvements. Not a big fan of laminate, but I still install it for whom ever needs it done. Have had to repair many floors and tearout many to install the real thing.

Q:12x12 tiles, what size trowel do i use and how far apart do i space tiles?: Use a 1/4 space Trowel, The spacing for a normal Lay would be about 1/8 or 3/16 in which you'd use NON-sanded Grout. You decide on how much space you want,it changes the look and amount of grout you'll need, and more work as you go wider, Now, if you go as wide as 1/4 or 1/2 you'll need to use a Sanded Grout. Ask at the home center where you make your purchases, they are knowledgable in that department, The dept has all the accesories you need, the spacers, Trowel, Float and Sponges etc. For the Sealer, get one that is Penetrating sealer,

Q:My mothers house has 9 tiles on her bathroom floor and I understand they are made with asbestos. Some of the tiles are starting to lift and I am concerned about how to remove and dispose of them, any suggestions?: Professionals seal off the room with heavy plastic and even have a separate chamber to change into white suits and respirator and then they shower afterwards . You shouldn't be messing with it!

Q:i need to lcut a circle 36x36 inch on floor tile thats about 1/2 inch thick. can dremel cut this? thanks: Depends on the exact type of tile. Some porcelain and other hard bodied tile you ll burn the bits and possible the motor itself. If it was a smaller area you had to cut out, it would possible work.
