Q: I will be putting matching ceramic tile as molding....what is the best way to attach the ceramic molding to the wall?
Thin set will hold it to a sealed ( painted of primered wall) but it will slip and slide down the wall.If your not stacking it on other tile or it is a heavier type pc ( like a chair rail molding) Mastic , the pre mixed glue is a better way to adhere it with the proper amount of glue. Most all tiles will stay on with out support and dry to the point it will tear off dry wall when removed. Mastic can not be used in a wet area such as in a shower/tub. Can be used outside on the wall. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: My kitchen floor tile has a number dings or chips caused by something heavy falling on them. Is there a way to repair these without having to remove/replace the entire tile?
Sorry to hear that.. Any tile will top chip inexpensive or not.. Just some more easy than others.. This depends on the type of tile..I ve always had people touch them up w/ an enamel touch up that you repair appliances with.. This will depend on colors of course .. Finger nail polish is a tougher touch up product to help too.. Not a cure or a fix but a hide.. Should you get more tile in the future and want to avoid this get a pure porcelain were color go all the way thru and not a porcelain bodied tile there is a difference GL
Q: I am looking to tile my livingroom/kitchen area appx 500sf. I am going with porcelain due to the strength ( i was told its better). My question is for resal (4-5 years) what is a better tile to lay; polished tile or regular glaze. I like the shiny clear coat look the polished has but someone mentioned it picks up footprints and it is not good for resale. Also, I was thinking that If I went with a larger tile, 18X18 or larger that it would look much cleaner with less grout lines, but since its only an area of 500sf that it would make my place look smaller than it is?any suggestions are helpful. Thanks
Porcelain can absolutely be a polished surface. Mechanically polished porcelain does need a sealer applied before a contrasting color of grout is used. The surface is a polished unglazed and needs to be sealed. Shiny glazed tile, whether ceramic or porcelain is an enamel glaze in a shiny finish. Totally different than polished, through body porcelain. Don t believe everything you hear.
Q: How many types of tiles are there?
2) quintana bricks: this brick is not glazed, fired on the surface after grinding, inside and outside with a pattern; quintana brick is a wear-resistant brick, although there are seepage through the whole body tiles and other varieties, but relatively speaking , Its color than glazed tiles. Widely used in the hall, aisle and outdoor walkway and other renovation projects on the ground; generally less used in the wall. Most of the anti-skid brick are all bricks. Common specifications: 300x300mm, 400x400mm, 500x500mm, 600x600mm, 800x800mm and so on.
Q: I was looking at the glazed tiles at Lowes, they‘re so nice looking, and they‘ve got so many colors.I‘m looking to tile my living room floor...I‘ve read glazed isn‘t good for floors, it‘s more for walls and counter tops. Can anyone tell me about this? I don‘t have any experience with tiles, what is the norm, the standard for floor tiles?
For tiles, glazed means that the colors you're seeing don't run all the way through the tile, not necessarily about the finish. If you're concerned about slip-resistance, see about a tile in a matte finish as opposed to a polished finish. Polished finishes can become slippery when you mop them - matte finishes are less likely to be slippery. Otherwise, if it's tile your after, then putting it in a living room is a great idea, particularly if you live in a hot climate. When shopping for tiles, make sure that you specify to your seller that you intend to use it for floor tile. You are right - certain tiles are only meant to serve as wall tiles, particularly dark colored glazed tiles. Make sure that the PEI rating on your chosen tiles are at least PEI3 or better. This is a measurement of how durable they will be in reference to where you'll be installing them. Good luck with your installation!
Q: What type, brand and or size ceiling tiles should be used in a commercial kitchen and bathroom
This Site Might Help You. RE: What ceiling tiles are used in restaurant kitchens and bathrooms? What type, brand and or size ceiling tiles should be used in a commercial kitchen and bathroom
Q: Is it possiable to stain or paint a ceramic tile floor. If so what are the steps I need to take to do it.We laid it about a year ago. My husband picked it out and it just does not look good next to the other tile he put in. I would hate to rip it out and lay a new one.Would the paint sets you buy at home depot for your garage floors work?
Your tile is most probably a glazed ceramic, meaning no paints would be able to penetrate to the biscuit. This means that all your paint would flake off over time. There is a glue on the market called Optima, and it is made by ABA Ardex. This glue comes in two parts, and it enables you to tile directly over tile. It isn't cheap though, so be weary when doing large areas. Other than that, most flexable glues would work if you remove 80% of the glaze, which means taking a grinder to the floor, which is hard and DIRTY work. If you were to do this, I would reccommend Abaflex.
Q: 2nd bathroom, rarely used. Not sure if I want to spend the time to remove the tile (200 sq ft) or just put a think underlayment over it and then laminate.Anything that I should be concerned with doing it this way?
Yes! You would be raising the floor by the thickness of the under layment and the laminate. Your flooring would end up against the side of your tub not to mention raising your toilet which may result in the need for longer bolts and may not be able to make a seal because of the distance between toilet and drain. You are asking for problems.. At the very least it would throw your baseboards off and they wouldn't match the ones in the hallway where they meet at the door!
Q: why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
Should the grout come away it can damage underneath especially in shower areas. You should use green moisture resistant plasterboard but ideally cement board on top as it is waterproof and perfect for tiling. Grout will eventually become discoloured and fall away over time in wet areas. Using correct technique in applying adhesive ( notched trowel or plastic notched spreader ) evenly and working within you capability will give you a good result, many try to do too much in one go....which is Ok for the professional. This way the tile will not come away. When applying tile on adhesive try a slight twisting motion to firm the tile in place, by placing finger on the front of tile....Important allow tile adhesive to dry fully before applying grout it takes 12 hrs approx as manufacturers spec. If tile when tapping makes a different sound (kinda hollow sound) it is loose and will need to be removed. Scrap out old adhesive and redo. Tip: Buy sealer (spray for grout) in excessively wet areas as it will extend the grout life and very good for shower areas. You can but sealer applicators but slow....mask and vent out when using spray as not good to breathe in and smell at first....
Q: I‘m trying to re-tile two small bathrooms. One is ~20 sf. The other is ~35 sf. I already have the tile, don‘t want any special designs, and have normal rectangular shaped bathrooms with a toilet on one wall (i.e. very few weird cuts). There is already tile on the floors that will have to be taken up. How much should I expect to pay to get someone to install it?
Tile labor varies but you can plan on 4/5$ a S/F not a s/y.. This won t include prep or rip out or any setting materials. That depends exactly what needs to be done.Rip out will vary too depending on just how the tiles are set now. I ve done rip outs that have taken an hr and have done ones that size that have taken all day. So have an installer look at the rip out part and quote a set price so both of you know on the rip out. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
