- I don't know what you mean by adapter. Wheel spacers and wheel adapters are two different things and serve two different purposes. Wheel spacers simply move the wheel farther away from the hubs. People use those with wide tires for more clearance. Wheel adapters on the otherhand, are used to change the bolt pattern on the hub. Say you have a 8 bolt hub and you want to put 6 bolt wheel on it. Or a hub set up for 15 wheels and you want to put 21 wheels on instead. So, to answer your question the way it's stated, if the wheels you will be installing have a different bolt pattern, then yes you will need use adapters with the spacers.

This will shorten the left tie rod slightly, and lengthen the right one. This will have the effect of keeping the front of your front wheels the same distance apart (sum toe) but rotate your steering wheel about 2 to 4 degrees. If this all sounds clear as much, take it to a technician who really knows what he (or she) is doing, and pay him about $50.
