- Q: The existing ceramic tiles on the floor run up to the cabinets and appliances. Should I lay the floor first and then the cabinets or the cabinets first?
- In any new home construction ANY flooring is installed after and up to the cabinets set on the floor. It seems logical to assume WASTE in doing otherwise. What possible purpose might it serve to have material costing upwards of $2 per sq. ft. Under, and hidden by, cabinets?? The replacement cabinets should be installed first,,,BUT...the old flooring removed first would be the best strategy. Steven Wolf PS: It's your choice as to floor install under a stove and refrigerator. I'd probably proceed that way if contracted.
- Q: I had new stone tile laid in my bathroom. 18 x 18 pieces, diagonally laid. One piece by the edge must have been stepped on by one of the tile layers as they were leaving and it got pushed down, so it‘s not level with the rest of the tiles by a small fraction. Its not noticeable if you walk on it with shoes, but if you walk on it barefoot or if you get down and feel it with your hands, there is clearly a noticeable difference. The flooring company refuses to come back and fix it claiming I did it. The piece is on the edge butting up against carpet from the bedroom. Is there any way I can make this tile level myself to avoid the hassle of trying to sue or file complaints against the flooring company? Maybe cut out that one piece without damaging and just put a new layer of the cement underneath it? I don‘t know. I‘ve never done tiling before.
- you can pick up a small tile saw at any tile /flooring outlet.it has a serrated edge for cutting into the grout that is around the tile.once you have removed the grout you should be abel to insert a wide blade putty knife under the tile and tap it in easy to loosen the tile once it is free clean the area of any adhesive and reset the tile.it is a shame that the co who did the install refused to come back and do the repair.if i were you i would file a complaint with the better business bureau in your area.good luck
- Q: We currently have carpet throughout our house, but due to having dogs, we hate the carpet. While hardwood or laminate seems the logical choice, tile would hold up much better to their toe nails. My concern is how having tile throughout the entire house (even in the living room, computer room, bedrooms, etc) would look. I know it is done sometimes, but I just can't picture it in my mind. How do you feel about it? Would the tile (it would be very neutral in color) be okay through the entire house or should we go with laminate deal with the scratches when/if they happen?
- Well its totally up to you but in my experience tile in every room is cold and not very inviting. Also we made the mistake of ripping up the carpet in our house so we could refinish the hardwoods underneath...bad idea. The floors were ruined and unsalvageable and and we found out our foundation was not suitable for laying laminate or tiles because it was raised in the middle of the house and sloped towards the edges. So seeing as we didn't have the money to lay carpet (we were going to lay the tiles or laminate ourselves) we have had a bare floor for over a year. If you (like us) have dogs that shed. The hair will be a daily nuisance. Between our two dogs and two cats there is hair blowing around the house constantly...which is not good especially when it ends up in the kitchen where your food is. Also we didn't realize how much the dogs preferred the soft carpet but as soon as we got an area rug for under our dining table they sleep there or on their dog pillow all the time and hate being on the hard floors. If you do decide to do tile make sure your floors do not give. My parents found out the hard way. Last year we laid their tile in their kitchen...we told them the floor had some give and that if we went ahead the grout may break out...after re-grouting twice and getting ready to try (hopelessly) again they finally realized that we were right. A few rooms are not as bad as the whole house. Hope this helps. Oh and keep your dogs nails clipped and that will cut down on snagging....if when walking through the house on hard floors and you hear them clicking they need to be trimmed if possible.

- Ceramic tile can not be refinished to have different look. If you do not like the tile, you will need to tear it out and put new tile down. There are many choices available. I would reccomend a porcelaine tile, beacuse they are stronger and more durable than cearmic.

- pei refers to the slip resistance of the tile . Thats the highest rating buttttt, most all porcelains are rated this high. 5 rates the tile at a commercial usage which will take heavy foot traffic The tinsel strength is just average. So overall its not a bad tile. The absolute most important thing is the proper setting technique. Not setting it properly and over the correct sub floor , it doesn t matter what you get. I would stay away from stones on the floor in a kitchen. Harder to maintain but they are beautiful in less foot traffic areas. Any type tile with a multi colored look helps hides day to day dirt and looks better between sweeping. There are a multitude of stone looking ceramics and porcelains. That the way I suggest.
