Q:we have a floor that is not level. The one side of the room is 1 and 1/2 inch lower than the other. This is a 200 year old home. We are wondering if we can use one of the floor leveling agents over top of the vinyl flooring that is glued down already, then put down a new "no glue" vinyl floor over it?Thank you, Cheri
No. Floor leveling compound will not adhere well to the old vinyl and I don't believe it should be applied 1 and 1/2 thick because it would shrink and crack when drying. Drying time would be excessive that thick. I'm thinking it would also be a bit pricey to use so much of it. I don't know how big the area is,but if it was me I'd first mark the low and high spots all the way around the room. The old floor joist should be on 16 centers. So from the low part of the floor you need to cut long wedges (out of 2x4,or 2x6,or 2x material) that taper from 1 1/2 (Minus the thickness or the new flooring underlayment),to nothing at the lowest point in the room, fasten that down, move over 16,measure the thickness needed and repeat the process. Run the wedges the same direction and on top of the original flooring joists. Hope this helps you.
Q:I have an old house and when we pulled up the 3 layers of tiles the concrete is black. This is from the stuff they used way back when to lay tile. In my research I have found all kinds of stuff on how to paint new cement. Can I just paint or stain it after I clean the floor. Or do I have to get all the black stuff off the floor first.

Q:What brands of laminate flooring in the market is durable and good with competitive pricing?
Get Pergo. It's good. I bought laminate flooring from LJB Products in Glendora California- .98 lin ft. nice guy, good deal. I can give you a phone number if you like. I think he'll ship to other states. He even told me what type of tools I would need for installation, etc.
Q:We are going to install 20mm laminate flooring and I heard that the underlayment is just a sound buffer. We currently have subfloor that is pretty flat and even. Can I omit the underlayment? What are the disadvantage of doing so? The laminate flooring will not have glued on back underlayment either. It will be a floating floor.
No you do not need any other underlayment. It is a bad idea to double up on padding because this will cause the joints in the floor to flex more and weaken the tongues, causing eventual board separation. It's very important that you use the 6 mil plastic for vapor barrier. Rosin paper is useless over concrete. Overlap the plastic a few inches and tape the seams and you should be fine. Feel free to email any other installation questions
Q:I used to live in an South American country and I moved to Canada. I need to know why aren't there holes on the bathroom floors in Canadian bathrooms? Where is the water supposed to go if I have to clean the floor? Should I just wait for it to evaporate? Also every time a toilet clogs, it leaks downstairs (in every single building I have seen, and at least two of them are very very new). Is this normal? Will it leak also when washing the bathroom floor??
I live in the US and we don't have holes in our floors. Use a mop and soak up the water.
Q:The previous owner of my house painted the cement slab garage floor. Now the paint is peeling off and looks bad. I would like to seal the floor with an epoxy-based sealant. Can I seal over top of the paint, or do I need to have the paint sandblasted off first?
No you can't seal over paint. If you want to apply an epoxy-based sealant then all the paint will have to be removed from the floor. There are good chemical paint strippers that you can use to remove the old paint. Contrary to what the post said, you will need to acid etch or grind the cement of your floor after you remove the paint. The reason of this is that epoxy based floor sealers need the pores of the concrete opened up and exposed in order for the epoxy to adhere properly. If you don't do this then it just peels up off the floor like your paint did. This does not hurt the finish of the concrete, it actually will make the epoxy last much longer.
Q:So I thought adding orange glo would add shine to my wood floor . It did . But now it looks all smudged and there's foot marks all over the floor with no shine just marks . How to i return the floor to how it was ???
Your best bet is Murphy's Oil Soap, mixed as directed for floors. Use hot water and a well-wrung mop so that the floor dries quickly. If that doesn't work, or you want another solution, then keep in mind that you need to find something strong enough to cut the oil in the orange glo, without damaging the wood floor. Hot water with a tiny amount of dishwashing liquid (not enough to need rinsing) or hot water with a cup of vinegar would both be safe for your floor, and might remove the oil with a few tries. In the future, don't use any furniture polishing products on the floor, in addition to problems like this, the floor will be slippery and dangerous to walk on.
Q:I bought lamanited flooring, the gentlemen that sold it to me said it was easy to install. I've done tile before so I believed him. I spend close to $400. worth. I ruin some planks because I tried to glue it. Anyway I would like to hire someone to do it, if not how can I do it myself. I know part of the problem is the floor is not even.
First unlike the guy said you don't have a subfloor problem these are just inconsistancies that comes with any thing you buy especially in lumber. Floor layers use a stuff called floor leveler it is easy to mix and easy to put down all you need is a flat troweland put a coat on the floor. It kind of works like a concrete trowel. Just put the stuff on the floor and let it dry then your best be is to put down some kind of underlayment. The profesinals will tell you a hard wood underlayment, like oak or white birch etc... I have yet to understand why they do that but most places won't warrenty the floor without the stuff. After you get that down all you have to do is lay your vinyl and you are done.
Q:if this helps my laminate floor is not cheap
