Q: I am looking at a home from 1939. i know asbestos was used from like the1970's back very often.i want to lay down different flooring in the kitchen, however i do now want to mess with the removal of the crap(asbestos)is there a way to put flooring down without having to get all this professional removal done. and no i don't want to mess with doing it myself either.
If the floor is in good shape, and there no local ordinances about removing the previous tile why not. If there is asbestos in the flooring, which I doubt, It is safer to leave it where it is and seal it under a new floor. Pry up a corner and look to see how many layer you have though. It may be that things are getting kind of tall in that kitchen in relation to the adjacent floors. If there is damage in the old floor and gaps between tiles you will want a filler product and check to see how level the floor is too. You may have to level it if it has deformed appreciatively over the years. Check some of the DYI sites here on the web some have very good tutorials and product recommendations.
Q: Moving to the French Quarter and would like to make a name plaque. How do you write "second floor" and "2nd floor" in French? Thanks!
I think you could answer this question yourself with a bit of guidance: 1. Will you ever work in politics? 2. Do you live on the west coast? 3. Do you think you will ever be interested in international trade? 4. Will you ever work in Quebec? 5. If you had to pick a any country in the world besides Canada where would that be? I live in Canada and I am deciding between Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic or Hindi - My decision is based on the countries I would do business with in the next 5-6 years. German is another candidate. Nothing wrong with French but how useful would it be to you based on your future goals vs any another language.
Q: I would like to reno my basement and the concrete floor is uneven. The four corners of the basement are lower than the rest. i would like to put in a few new walls and cork flooring. Whats the best way to level my floor.
There is a type of concrete called leveling concrete which flows well and is designed to do just this, level out uneven floors. But it requires some tools and skills, you would probably be better off to hire it done, because if it is done poorly, you've got a mess. Another consideration is is a product called dry-floor which is particle board squares with a waterproof dimpled plastic base designed to finish damp basement floors. This could be shimmed up using a level and give you a wonderful base for any floor including carpeting, laminate or tile.
Q: My computer & router is on the second floor, but my xbox 360 is in my basement.
My computer & router is also on the second floor, and also my xbox 360 is in my basement. For me Xbox Live works about 65% of the time. It has annoyed me so much that now I am moving my computer and router to my first floor. I would recommend that you do the same.
Q: I have 3 rooms with shinny floors. I use swifter wet every day and i mop using fuller floor shine once a week. My floors don't shine like it should. What can i use to get my floors to look shinny.
I had a vinyl floor that had a dull film built up from wax. First I warn you, use a mask and open doors and windows if you do what I did. I mixed double the recommended sudsy ammonia to water and mopped. It dissolved the build up and I was left with a clean but not shiny floor. Next I used Armstrong floor cleaner and I was delighted with the shine. It looked like new. I will never use another floor cleaner because it does not build up.
Q: could u build a stair case on top of the floor without messing the floor up?
yep where there is a will ther is a way. I do carpentry and ever-thing I do is perfect(and anything thats not there is always an easy fix) So for a floating floor that doesnt float of the steps scribe a pattern for each step and cut it tight and snap it in as for a finished look on the nose, rip your floor at a 45 using a laminte or solid surface blade(triple chip) then glue up your noses using exopy(epoxy is strong and fast drying) Once the tread is snaped in to place cut a lenght for your nose, apply exopy and then apply to the tread. Build a jig to apply square pressure keeping the nose from dropping or moving away from the tread and weight it down with all those books you aren't reading. Viola you have tigh fitting, nonslipping, glueless, laminate flooring. Oh yeah and if you dont want to spend the time to be a perfect carpenter just glue them, then when you are ready to pull them up come on yahoo answers and ask how to refinish a floor.
Q: My bathroom floor in front of the sink makes horrible creaking noises when I stand there. There is no other way around not standing in that spot. What causes this and how can I stop it.
If you are able to access this area under the floor, (basement) and you can identify the area that squeeks, run a bead of construction adhesive along each framing member in this area. Try to squirt as much as possible between the framing and the floor. This should quiet the floor for now. When you decide to replace the floor covering, run deck screws thru the floor into framing from above. This should quiet the floor completely.
Q: I am naming a line of laminate flooring that will be in stores. The name should suggest that the floor is quiet, peaceful and sounds like real hardwood. Any suggestions?
I'd call it Cedar Grove.
Q: i'm on approx a $400 budget for a new floor. would like laminate, wood, no carpet. My floor is approx 265 sq ft. can I just buy wooden planks and sand, stain, and wax it myself?
watch your local stores for their sales on vinyl tiles, cork tiles and other piece-by-piece flooring options. Many times they'll put an old style on sale when they are bringing in a new style. The old style may be just what you were looking for
Q: i'd like to level them from the floor joists, not adding another floor over the existing ones
leveling the floor can be involved but it is not very complicated . As it is a sign of something settleing in the house you can look for signs of foundation problems .You can also level the floor by sistering new joist onto the old ones or as simple as cutting tappered shims the lenght of the joist and than fasten them to the top of each joist to level it . than you can install your subfloor and be on your way . As for the problem with contractors it seems many people have some dilusional idea of what it takes to accomplish the task at hand . the real world isn't the DIY network or the home makerover show .If people realised how much those projects on tv really cost they would be amazed. and many people seem to hire the cheapest guy they can find , there is usually a reason why the contractor is much lower than anyone else , You really do get what you pay .
