- If you have a small greenhouse you could grow them indoors. It is best to start the plants indoors and when they are ready you can transplant them to your garden. Choose a seed. After much testing, the following varieties were proved to provide the best yields: Omega, Linton and Rahab. Linton and Rahab are brown colored and Omega is golden in color. Prepare Soil. Flax seed grows best in soil that is well drained and contains a large amount of organic matter Plant the flax seed. Sow the seeds in early spring. Specific planting times will vary based on where you live, so check with your local seed supplier. Once planted, cover lightly with approximately 1/8-inch of soil. These plants will bloom the following season. If you plant them in the fall, they will bloom in the spring. Again, check with your local grower about best planting times. The ideal spacing is about 10 to 12 inches apart Grow Flax. Flax likes full sun. You will also need a general fertilizer when initially planting and then continue to add each month until harvest. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Make sure to prune the plants to keep them healthy. Prevent Disease. Flax is prone to fungal disease and other blights. There are many organic and non-organic fungicides to choose from. Recommended for insects are Sevin or Telone; for fungicide: Busam or Captan. Harvest Flax. Flax is ready to harvest when 90 percent of the seed capsules have turned brown. You simply mow it and then rake it up into sections and let it dry. Hope this helps and happy gardening.
- Q: I live in San Diego, Ca,, pretty sunny most of the year, but can get pretty cold in the winter.. I'm hoping to start my own veggie and herb garden this summer (august 08) but don't know if it's the right season to do it, or if I should just wait. Since I'm just starting, I would like to begin with herbs and a few veggies (tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, snap peas, peppers) do these grow well in this area???As to prepping the ground, after loosening it, weeding it, what needs to be done??Thank you!
- You need to add some fertilizer, (In Australia something like Blood'n bone). dig it in, and also heap the soil up into rows (to help drainage). Someone else was asking about Vegie gardens in the Australian part of this, and one person suggested newspaper around the plants to suppress the weeds. This is a great idea. Go to your local nursery and see what vegie seedlings they have in stock now. Or ask there as they will know what is in season. Goodluck with your garden :)

- Raji, go visit a Home Garden Show, which are plentiful in California and along the westcoast. There you find exhibits of so many spa dealers, that they literally fall over each other.
- Q: There is an ad in an older Better Homes and Garden and the other magazine that has a cake on the cover every month (I am drawing a blank on the name). The add has a womens ring on a cherry or a little red fruit and the mens rings on a walnut. If someone could tell me the designer of those rings or even if the ad states what style rings they are that would be great! It is driving me crazy, I saw it once and fell in love with the rings! The cake magazine that for sure has the ad inside has on the cover is a mint tart style dessert. Thank you so much!
- My advice for you would be to go on their website and contact the magazine (Better Homes and Gardens). Ask about past issues of the magazine and see if the sales/customer service rep on the phone can help you figure out which issue it is. They'll have all the copyright information for photographs of products featured in the magazine and once you pinpoint which issue the ad is featured in, they'll be able to give you the product name. You might be amazed how willing they are to help you find the info you're looking for. I've had to do this with other various information I was looking for in the past. Your best bet would be to go right to the source.

- Q: Not sure of the year of the cookbook, but the recipe is not in any current Better Homes and Garden Cookbook or any I have found at the library. I believe the egg foo yung recipe was listed exactly as that. It contained cabbage, bean sprouts, celery, and green pepper. It included a sauce recipe. This is my huband's favorite recipe, and I have lost it. My cookbook fell apart and I operated from the loose page, knowing I should have attached it to something. Procrastination is an awful thing. Tomorrow is my husband's birthday and he always requests this recipe. I know I may be too late here and will have to punt tomorrow, but I would still like the original recipe, if possible. Thank you.
