Thanks!: It should be okay, LAN cables are meant to be up to 100 meters long, your shorter cables shouln't pick up too much interference. Also, the wires are shielded and in twisted pairs which helps to negate interference. Not only that but for this reason the network adaptors will be designed to filter out low frequencies.

Can i shave the square one or will it not work?: No, you can use the power cable for a computer on the PS3. It is a standard shape and can be purchased from any good computer shop. The PS2 uses a transformer and the pin alignment is different. Just get a proper cable, they are really cheap anyway.

The power is supplied across an RJ45 cable from a box situated in the patch cabinet I assume the receiving box has to have the correct ports to be able to use this.

And back in the day when Firewire was more common any good firewire card had a power socket on it, again, either a Molex plug or a floppy power plug. AD
