Q: Tower cranes sometimes have very long booms, but seem to usually have fixed counter-weights at fixed positions behind the cab. Why doesn't it flip backwards when there is no load, or flip forwards when a load is way at the far outward end of the boom? It seems to be a very large range of moment arms given that the counter-weight has a fixed one.
I think the counter weights are connected to a pully system that directly interacts with the boom and hook movement. This way it can put more or less pull on the weights according to the amount of weight or position of the weight on the crane.
Q: Just wondering i am so confused
It's a crane thing. Seriously though - overhead crane, gantry or polar crane!
Q: Do cranes, the bird, have any significance in Egyptian or Chinese mythology?
A crane is considered auspicious in China, Japan and Vietnam. It is one of the symbols of longevity and is often represented with other symbols of long life, such as pine, bamboo, and the tortoise. Vietnamese people consider crane and dragon to be symbols of their culture. In feudal Japan the crane was protected by the ruling classes and fed by the peasants. When the feudal system was abolished in the Meiji era of the 19th century, the protection of cranes was lost. With effort they have been brought back from the brink of extinction. Japan has named one of their satellites tsuru (crane, the bird). According to tradition, if one folds 1000 origami cranes one's wish for health will be granted. Since the death of Sadako Sasaki this applies to a wish for peace as well. Also, traditional Chinese 'heavenly cranes' (tian-he) or 'blessed cranes' (xian-he) were messengers of wisdom. Legendary Taoist sages were transported between heavenly worlds on the backs of cranes.

Q: I was half way through this book and had to stop reading it because school got in the way. I'm back to reading it and I got to the part where Katniss made a noose and tied it around a dummy and showed it to the Gamemakers. And she wrote 'Seneca Crane'. I don't remember who that was. If it was even a person, I guess it was. But can you just explain who or what 'Seneca Crane' is and why Katniss would do that? Thanks.
He was the previous head gamemaker, and President Snow basically declared that he had Seneca Crane executed. Crane allowed Peeta and Katniss to live and cut off the final moment of the berries, which to Snow was an act of defiance. I think Katniss hanging the doll was just a symbolic act, implying that the gamemakers are really all just puppets under the Capitol.
Q: I'm thinking of making a senbazuru for by boyfriend as our first anniversary gift but I'm not sure if it's appropriate. I know its usually given to couples as a marriage gift, but yeah...does it seem too much?Btw a senbazuru is 1000 paper Cranes strung together. Thanks for the help!
You could but it's a waste of time and it isn't really keepable.. No offence intended but it'll just be an extra mess. Give him something he can keep and plus you'll waste your time if you guys ever break up. However, it can also be a good luck for him and it's a good gift considering you put so much effort in it
Q: My dad has some old tools and he is wondering if the company is still around, or what happened to it. A yahoo search revealed little.
Found on - www.lathes .uk/boicecrane/ Boice-Crane - USA Boice-Crane (Wilton Division) made various types of power tools, including a selection of wood lathes intended for amateur and educational use, and in the 1940s and early 1950 their range included, amongst others, the two amateur and one professional or educational machines illustrated below. The more robust lathe of the amateur pair had a 50 inch long bed with 10 swing and able to take 34 between centres; the 4-step V pulley in the headstock could be driven from either from the rear, or underneath. The bed, which had a gap able to swing 14, was internally ribbed and machined on its top surface. The No. 1 Morse taper tailstock was fitted with self eject for the centre. The double-ended spindle was 1.25 inches in diameter and ran on ball bearings - whilst the single faceplate contained two different diameter, left and right-hand threads so that it could be screwed onto either end. The lathe weighed 115 lbs, so, despite an insubstantial appearance, must have been a reasonably robust machine. The other bench lathe had a bed built from two steel channel sections - with the most elementary type of headstock and tailstock. The capacity was 10 x 30, the weight 30 lbs and the headstock spindle carried a 4-step, overhung, V-belt pulley. The company are now: Gothenburg Manufacturing Co., P.O. Q: Does anyone know where I can locate a print or lithograph of the chromolithograph done in the 1850's of William John WIlgus' Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman?
Ichabod Crane, Respectfully Dedicated to Washington Irving. by William J. Wilgus, artist chromolithograph, c.
Q: this is a little of a random question but why do you think that we should save the crested cranes of uganda? and what do you know about the crested cranes???
Because man is a reasoning being he has the capability of saving things. It is in our nature. Secondly, if man's activities are the cause of the Crane's extinction - destroyed its habitat or food source, then man should help reverse this.
Q: You know those machines you pay and get like 15 seconds to operate the fricken metal hand? Can you give me some tips?
make sure you find something that isn't trapped by anything else in the pit.. line up the crane one the front, then move over to the side and line it up... these machines used to be a lot easier 20 years ago, but now the arm doesn't apply much pressure.. it has to be lined up just right or you will never get anything...
