Q: how can I get rid of what looks like small crane flies in my yard and house. they seem to get in the grass?
First determine if they are hurting anything. If they are true crane flys they will go a way soon. If they are not hurting anything I would not treat them. If you want to identify exactly what they are capture some and take them to you County Extension agent and he/she will be able to tell you what they are and if they pose a danger to you and your family.
Q: have you noticed that there has been an exceptionaly high volume of cranes falling over in the U.S.A. this year? 2 cranes went down this week, one in Texas killing a man. seems like there has alot of this lately, what the hell is going on with the cranes? ever night i turn on the news its like a deadly crane accident took place today . thanks.
Accident Reports Received for year 2007: 347 Deaths for 2007: 176 Accident Reports Received for year 2006: 314 Deaths for 2006: 109 Accident Reports Received for year 2005: 231 Deaths for 2005: 127 Accident Reports Received for year 2004: 287 Deaths for 2004: 142 Accident Reports Received for year 2003: 269 Deaths for 2003: 138 Accident Reports Received for year 2002: 171 Deaths for 2002: 96 Accident Reports Received for year 2001: 161 Deaths for 2001: 107 Accident Reports Received for year 2000: 184 Deaths for 2000: 74 (It gets really scary when you look at the increase of deaths in just a few short years.)
Q: If a crane fly loses a leg will he be okay? Is it painful for him or do they just 'release' them like a lizard can release it's tail?
Chances are, it won't be O.K. Some spiders can release their legs, but only if given fair warning (a gentle tug). If the crane fly lost his leg violently, he will probably die from the injury. Whether or not the injury kills him, he will, of course, be more vulnerable to predators. Not to be morbid or cold, because I really do love animals, and hate to see harm come even to the under appreciated invertebrates, but the Crane fly usually only lives a couple of days, so as long as he mated, his job on earth was finished anyway.
Q: how do they make those tall cranes so TALL?
piece by piece.
Q: plz help me
The Whooping Crane (Grus americana) is a very large crane. It is the tallest North American bird and the only crane species found solely in North America. Adults are white; they have a red crown and a long, dark, pointed bill. They have long dark legs which trail behind in flight and a long neck that is kept straight in flight. Black wing tips can be seen in flight. Immature birds are pale brown. Their breeding habitat is muskeg; the only known nesting location is Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada and the surrounding area. They nest on the ground, usually on a raised area in a marsh. The female lays 1 to 3 eggs. Both parents feed the young. Usually no more than one young bird survives in a season. Loads more on Wikipedia (link below) - good luck
Q: how can we minimize energy losses of a crane to reduce the impact on the environment?
No hint as to what type or size of crane, so I assume it is a large overhead traveling bridge crane inside an industrial building: Consult the manufacturer for recommendations. Change its power source to something cleaner (from diesel to propane or electric). Properly lubricate and adjust all moving parts. Turn power off when idle. Schedule heavy usage during hours of low demand of electric utility power. Replace motor with a more efficient new one. Replace entire crane with a new efficient one. Replace the large capacity one with one or more smaller units.
Q: how do they take crane off top of building?
Giant crane is used helicopter to lift it up and bring it down from very tall building.
Q: my 7 year old son swears that a crane jumper is a type of animal...any one heard of this??
I googled crane jumper and came up with nothing. Not to say there isn't such a creature, that could be a regional name for it, it might be called something else.
Q: It affects my day to day life, especially in the summer, having to cope with crane flies, wasps and moths getting into my house, so I usually just pretty much keep myself in my room, door closed, windows closed to prevent any from getting into my room. If I happen to be near any of these insects I tend to have a panic attack and can't handle it. I have no reason for my fear, I am just afraid of them for no reason. If my room is too hot, I'll just sit in the dark with the window slightly open, in fear of them coming into my room. It's getting silly now and a lot of my friends will tease me about it. Really it's weird, I'm afraid of these insects, however I don't mind spiders (though I will not touch them), or any other insects for that matter. Can anyone help me to overcome my fears?
Think butterflies and hang a bag of water over your door also keep a bottle of bug spray handy
Q: Who was the guy called the Headless Horseman in the story of Ichabod Crane?
In the Washington Irving version of the story (which may be the original, I don't know if he based it on an earlier story or not), the Horseman is the ghost of a Hessian mercenary who fought died during the American Revolutionary War (if you don't know about this, Hessians were German mercenaries that were hired by the British). However, in this story, the guy never is given a name. He might be given a name in other versions of the story, but I am only really familiar with the Washington Irving version the various movies based on that story.
